Hi, all.

I currently have a situation where I want to temporarily kill my DSL connection due to my flatmates failling to pay money they owe me in relation to the monthly bills. I'm not concerned about losing access to it myself, or having to pay for the period during which the connection is unavailable as I'm confident that the flatmates will pay up within a few days of suspending the connection and I have a Vodafone wireless device that I can use in the meantime.

Since I am the only person who knows the router password (I will probably change it to be sure), I'm wondering if there is a setting on the router that I could fiddle in order to cut the DSL connection. What would be the best way to go about this? Would there be any pitfalls?

If this idea isn't feasible then I might contact Snap and see if they can temporarily suspend the connection from their end.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Depending on the Router type you could lock out the Flatmates Ip Addresses and only allow your self access to the net or just turn the router off/unplug the phone line that will stop it working

Swing teh banhammer to your flatmates MAC addresses!!

Easy enough to go from "allow" this address to "ban" it.

If they arent uber techie then chances are they wont know/cbf to intercept your data and impersonate your mac address.

if you havent got mac address filtering i suggest you put it on, and then add only your pc id to it.

As you mentioned, its probably just going to be used to galvanise them into paying so you dont really want a solution that is gonna stop the net altogether!

Thanks, guys. Good advice.

Unfortunately I don't have physical access to the router so can't just unplug it and run away with it, but the MAC address idea sounds like it would work a charm. How do I find out or set the MAC address on my machine? I'm running OS X Snow Leopard.

Why not take the modem away? Then they cant use it, but you can always plug it back in if you need it?

The only worry you have is that if you do not have physical access to the router then "they" have the ability to swap it out for another one, ( if they are techy enough),

To find your MAC addess should be like this ( I dont have my apple with me, but under leopard this is where your can see your MAC address is hidden, 10.6 should be similar)

1. Open System Preferences.

2. Click Network .

3. Click Ethernet on the left.

4. Click the Advanced button.

5. Click the Ethernet tab. Next to Ethernet ID is the MAC address.

im guessing the router is in a flatmates bedroom???

Um its reasonably easy to find your mac address.....google it. Should be a 16 ? digit code, once entered into the system, and filtering is turned on should only allow access to someone with that mac address(unless someone spoofs it).

Your airport will have a different MAC address than your ethernet port so make sure you use the right one!

Find his top few favourite websites, then go to his computer and edit this file with notepad:

"C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts"

Swap trademe or nzherald with www.kittenwar.com or something.

I redirected all his sites to ihug's and told him thats the only site you can get to when you don't pay the bill. Had my money within the hour - he had auctions he was watching =D

Haha, oh the things I could do to get revenge if I were that way inclined!

Yes, the router is in the flatmates bedroom but these two guys are not tech savvy (the cocky know all one seriously believes that setting the router up wrong will wipe his entire hard drive) and they're not likely to try to replace the router or spoof addresses or anything like that so it should work.

What make and model is the adsl modem? Most have an access control list where you can block certain clients by MAC address or block everyone and white list your MAC address.
