Ragnor: That sounds a bit odd, what area/exchange was this?

You can lookup the address on http://www.telecomwholesale.co.nz/maps to find out what the exchange or cabinet name is.

Exchange Area: Mt Albert (Auckland)
Cabinet Name: MAB/BX

I was told that although the cabinet had been upgraded to ADSL2+, there were just too many people using the network in that area (or something like that). The person I spoke to said that he was telling me this upfront so that if I experienced performance issues after being connected, I would know that Snap might not be able to do anything about it (or words to that effect).

Ok this was fixed on Friday, the 0800 number does accept cell phone calls now. Someone beat me to it ;)

My parents are actually right on the edge of the Mt Albert exchange area, several km's of "line distance" and they get ok speed for their distance even at peak time.  I don't think peak time congestion is as bad at the impression he gave you, however he's right in that problems before traffic gets to gets to their network are out of their control largely.

Currently I don't think any new whisper cabinets have been installed in the area at all, everyone is still connected to ADSL equipment in the exchange.  The good news is cabinetisation is due by mid 2011, this will shorten the distance between peoples houses and the ADSL gear.

I would guess the MAB/BX cabinet you mention is just a old distribution point and doesn't contian any ADSL equipment.

Hi Ragnor

thanks for that - i was hoping someone might know a bit about speeds in that area, so that's really useful. One of the main things I use my internet connection for is streaming video (youtube/megavideo), so decent international speeds are important. Do you know anything about these in that area?
