Wow what can i say... very steep indeed. would have been nice to combine cell data with normal data so you pay the normal fee but hey.. telecom rob us all even tho their cell towers run 24/7, the power etc is no different to just sending a txt but hey, i'll stay with telecom xt as snap is far too expensive right now.

it means it dont matter if its a txt or internet usage the power in and out are the same

In any case you have options, try Vodafone, 2degrees, Orcon, Black+White, TelstraClear. What really annoys me though is that some people manage to insert their [I HATE TELECOM] speak even when criticising another company's service or prices. You don't have to stick with the provider you have now, you know? The OP has the assumption that because the technology is wireless some Magical Pixy Fairy comes down and spreads the joy of mobile connectivity. Whilst completely ignoring the fact that this fairy is a corporation which has to borrow money in order to pay for the installation, connection and maintenance of the network. Not to mention paying for the bandwidth which is not free! Imagine if they gave everyone unlimited internet/calling/text... How would the Pixy Fairy cope? IMO go with 2degrees if you want cheap, go with Telecom if you want data, or vodafone if you want prepay.

i guess what i was trying to get at is that snap should install their own 3g stuff and have data counted in/towards the internet monthly plan, even if the plans was $10/m more it would still pay itself off. after all the cell towers are merely repeaters so to speak.

Do you have a spare 400 mill? 2degrees have spent this and only have a tiny portion of the country established. Snap sure don't have this much. Each tower costs about 100k... They aren't just that simple.

this didnt answer my question on what cell phone towers are and what is their job.... yes we know the cost factor but im sure when being the best provider out there you would have no real issues in recovering the cost plus some in a short time.

AviZ: i guess what i was trying to get at is that snap should install their own 3g stuff and have data counted in/towards the internet monthly plan, even if the plans was $10/m more it would still pay itself off. after all the cell towers are merely repeaters so to speak. i am not too sure if you are joking or you dont quite understand the concept of how this '3g stuff' works. first, it will cost ~$700-800 million to setup this 3g network throughout new zealand. it costs 2degrees $250million to setup their own network in four main cities only - queenstown, christchurch, auckland and wellington. on top of that, you will need to apply for resource consent and have your own towers. Snap has to buy 3G spectrum from the government. this is not something that you can just decide to buy today and get it the following day. it probably costs $5million per 5Mhz block (correct me if i am wrong). one last thing, you will need a dedicated team of engineers to run and support this network. do you think by charging $10 extra, they will have enough money to pay off these costs?
