Hi I just found out about this agreement that is being negotiated very soon, its called TPPA, It doesn't look very good for us Kiwi's, here's a link about it and a video on the page as well.

I followed the link to "take action" and sent a letter to them, although it seems there might not be much we can do. I hope this doesn't go through :(

Briefly discussed back in May and even mentioned back in April 2011 during the discussion of the new copyright law ammendment.

This has been going on for years already. People just don't know or pay attention because it's being done very slowly...

I imagine any legislation passed by parliament must be made public when it is read. Would that not be an appropriate time to consider any bill submitted by parliament?

Common misconceptions.

When a government signs one of these treaties it is a serious thing.

Later on when enabling legislation is presented in parliament, all government MPs will be instructed to vote for it. If a government MP looks like they might not vote in favor, well this is really unlikely, but if so they will come under immense pressure from many different directions. It won't happen.

If the government later changes to a different party - will that party change the treaty? Very unlikely in NZ, and that would mean renegotiating it with many other countries. It doesn't really happen. Once it is signed, it is signed.

The current government is not dumb enough to completely gut Pharmac and that will probably not happen but I would expect minor changes intended to slowly creep up on that sector over time.

The Herald today looks at the implications for NZ's intellectual property laws and how negotiation of the TPP has likely affected our IP laws already.
