Scammers and hackers are on their way out and censorship breaches and online child exploitation now another step closer to being stopped, says NetSafe about The ORB – Online Reporting Button (www.theORB.org.nz).   

The ORB is a website developed by NetSafe, New Zealand’s online safety organisation. The ORB is a place where New Zealanders can report online crime such as spam, fraud, privacy breaches and child exploitation. Reports can be anonymous.  

NetSafe’s Executive Director, Martin Cocker says The ORB is a necessary addition to New Zealand’s cybersafety and security initiatives and funding for NetSafe is provided by the Ministry of Education and Internet NZ.  “Nobody expects to get caught up in or witness a cyber crime, and when they do, they often don’t know where to turn.  The ORB now provides them with a single place to go when this happens.  The ORB will take complaints and then review them, via NetSafe.  When the right law enforcement agency has been identified, the complaint will be passed on to the correct enforcement agency.  If you are unsure if you are a victim of online crime or if what you have seen is in fact criminal activity, The ORB is the first site to visit.  NetSafe is determined to identify online criminals, with the help of its partners,” says Cocker. 

“Cyber space is vast and extremely difficult to monitor. The agencies partnered on the ORB are determined to make this space safer for New Zealanders, but they need the community to help. The ORB makes it simple for the community to support the work of these agencies. “ 

The free, online service is also supported by Police Commissioner Howard Broad and New Zealand Police.  Commissioner Broad believes The ORB is a step towards catching the criminals that endanger New Zealand’s 3.5 million internet users.  “So many New Zealanders are exposed to online criminal activity every day – whether they can see it or not.  If we can make it easier for individuals to report something, we hope to make it easier to locate the source and eliminate the risk for others.  "We have all heard of a number of instances where online activity has lead to real life violence or potential for criminal activity, and targeting these issues before this happens is essential,” says Commissioner Broad. 

With key support from the Department of Internal Affairs, the Commerce Commission, NZ Police, NZ Customs and the Privacy Commissioner, the site is easily navigated, with the types of complaints The ORB is set up to deal with outlined on the home page:

- Spam messages that you may be receiving via email, instant messaging or SMS.
- Objectionable material in computer games, videos or online content that may breach New Zealand’s censorship laws.
- Scams or frauds such as Internet offers that you believe are fake and costing you money.
- Concerns about a breach of your privacy through the collection or use of your personal information.
- Concerns about people using the internet for the exploitation of children including online grooming and the making or trading of abuse images.
- Online traders that are breaching the Fair Trading Act or selling counterfeit or prohibited goods.
- Attacks to your computer system and network infrastructure like malware, viruses and hacking in your home or workplace.
