Thought we were trying to reduce beauracracy in the public sector? It looks like education needs their own unique identifier to go along with the IRD Number, Passport Number and National Health Identifier.

I am sure there is enough cross-over for them to use one of these? Surely given the cross-ver between Health and education with B4 school checks, Special Education Services, school nursing services, and now the gateway assessments for CYFs kids.

Why don't they use the NHI, we are already spending $15 million on this:

Because then big brother would have control of our minds... Well seriously, there would be privacy issues involved with the potential for unauthorised sharing of data between government departments, and the government would face renewed criticism of preparing to introduce a national id card through the backdoor.

Maybe we need to have a discussion about the trade off between privacy and the efficiency of the public service?

As most of these influence each other and intersect, without knowing who is doing what, we all have to repeat what everyone else is doing.

Education already has it's own unique number system (NSN - National Student Number) used by ITOs, polytechs, Universitys etc.

Like most of us here I haven't looked into it, but...

34 million? (plus running costs I guess) What? What exactly is the education dept trying to achieve with a national ID for kindergarten age kids?

It's not as if preschoolers need detailed recording of their educational achievements. Um, is it?

It seems especially wasteful, considering there is a proposal to give breakfast to kids in decile 1 to 3 areas for about 14 million.

so in other words, it's just an extension of using the ENROL function (assigning National Student Numbers) to students down to primary.

This started in tertiary, went down to secondary, then primary. Just another extension on the whole thing. Doesn't sound like anything revolutionary, other than perhaps another computer system
