jjnz1:
mobiusnz: Samsung etc are making some beautiful hardware but I had to restart my Tablet or crash out of apps nearly every evening I used it - Since getting my Ipad 3 I've restarted it 2 or 3 times since I got it release day - I do get the?occasional?app crash but you simply run it again, no reboot needed.

Hmmm very strange... I hardly ever restart my galaxy tab running rooted stock ics... it just works. Also my GS3 never gets restarted either... that's running CM10.

Could it be something you've done? IOS6 can't be modified/customized so can't really be broken... whereas android is highly customisable, and can quite easily be broken if you don't fully understand what you are doing..

I do however think that Samsungs first release of a product works but could be made more efficient and faster.. their second release - in this case ics, is a huge improvement... at least with the galaxy tab anyway.

Send using my Galaxy Tab 10.1

It's absolutely stock. And I've factory reset it. The most common problem I've had is with exchange email. My iPad and iPhone check and download new messages, the android appears to check and returns nothing new, no error but nothing new. Sometimes killing the mail app and rerunning it kicks it in the pants but generally wait a while and it just works again. Ice experienced this with clients galaxy phones with exchange too. I'm in IT (going on 18 years) and most of my client sites run Exchange server 2003 or 2010, iOS never fails with exchange mail, android is ok. I'm no apple fanboy, iPhone 4 was my first apple product and I own a second hand Mac purely for the iOS dev kit and due to a lack of spare time to experiment with it it has spent 99.9% of its life running windows 7 as I can't stand OsX. I really hope android gets better, ICS is looking like a big step up from Honeycomb and by all accounts Jellybean is better still. There is a lot of nice hardware out there running Android but I don't think android has a patch on iOS for stability. Feature wise there are things that piss the hell out of me that iOS can't do (protect an app with a password, I have some key data to protect but having to type a pin every time I use my phone drives me bonkers) that I'm sure there's an app for on android but iOS just does the basics to damn well to ignore.

My other biggest beef in android honeycomb was text entry in browser forms, the lag was incredible - even on a stock out of box galaxy. I won't lie and say my iPad 3 is never laggy but its incredibly rare. Just got an iPhone 5 yesterday and I'm loving it, mainly upgraded for Siri as in my trials it'll do a good job of adding calendar appointments in the car from my hands free kit as I get a lot of calls while driving and constantly forget appointments due to another call coming in. Sorry to rant but I like the intelligent responses you get here so like to see what people's views are. Just got my staff member an iPhone 5, he's used his personal galaxy sII up for the first three months he's worked for me so looking forward to seeing how he compares them after a few weeks of use. Generally I've found people like the platform they start on, I may well be an android fanboy today if I'd started out on an android device.

Yes the galaxy tab 10.1 running honeycomb was crap as hell. It wasn't even using hardware acceleration from memory. That's why I went straight to Cm9. Lots better.

I like the Samsung devices for their specs and looks only, not usually the stock OS. I'm an android fanboy from way back and hate apple... so much so that I bought my grandma an ipad 3 because its a 'for grandmas' device ;)...

But stock apple seems to beat stock Samsung for user experience (lagging mainly) . I couldn't give my stock honeycomb tab to my wife, my grandma, or even some of my mates as if they haven't used an android device before, I'm sure they would be put off... but now im running infamous v2.1 which is basically USA stock ics thats been rooted and given some much needed 'speed', I don't mind handing it to anyone I know... (except my grandma, android is too complicated for her, best she stick to IOS)

Sent using my galaxy tab 10.1, yes there are lots of errors, and yes it took me 2 hours to write this.

mobiusnz: Well - Got fed up with waiting for samsung to roll it out to our region so I went ahead and installed it manually. Its actually amazingly easy (I've flashed phones etc, but never android) - Downloaded the official firmware for my GT-7510, download Odin, put the Tablet into recovery mode (Hold power and volume down) and clicked PDA in Odin, selected the firmware file and clicked start, less than 10 minutes later I'm running a snappy ICS official Samsung build. Could not have been easier. I used the video and links at

http://galaxytabhacks.com/galaxy-tab-10-1-unroot/how-to-unrootupdate-to-official-ics-android-4-0-4-on-galaxy-tab-10-1/

The guy waffles a bit but everything is covered. No rooting required, I went from a stock Honeycomb to a Stock ICS hiccup free.

The two reasons I bought a Samsung were 1) I got a cheap deal - 2) At the time it appeared they were very proactive in keeping their devices up to date. Sony seem to be doing far better on providing updates for their handsets than Samsung unless you happen to be running Samsungs current flagship offering.

Hopefully ICS improves the experience as since buying an Ipad 3 I've rarely used the Samsung

Oh this post made it too easy... now enjoying the wonders of ICS and now matches all my phones!

3G worked Great from Reboot, but I had no Play Store!!! EEEKK!!! thankfully a factory reset fixed it all up!

Thanks for the link!

So how about Samsung store? Understand not working if you download the italian rom?

I don't know if you mean Samsung App or Samsung Hub but they both appear to run. I've never bothered with them personally.

I meant Samsung apps (ie samsung app store) but willing to sacfifice to stop laggy honeycomb....and SACRIFICE crappy keyboard

Works fine on my 10.1 3G Tab. Never use Samsung apps or the hubs. Don't see the point of it.

I got sick of waiting, this is crazy to have to put up with it (the waiting). I mean no body should have to go as far to force an update or mod, when an update is already here, but Samsung has not bothered to release it here.

I want to keep my old one factory with a factory update. I sold it a few weeks ago, and come here today to see if they got an update out. Pretty sad that it still has not happened.

I have Apple devices and Andriod so I like both the same, each has their own that they can do. At least with Apple when they say they are releasing an update, you get it.

This will be the last Samsung tablet I buy until they get there act together.

I just did the upgrade using these downloads and instructions. Very straight forward. Mine is a GT-P7500.

me too! thanks guys. up yours samsung for holding this upgrade back from us and being too lazy to roll out to NZ. The only tip I have from the guides is that to get into download mode you have to take your fingers of the power and vol down button quickly. then you can take your time and push the volume up to select download mode. Will check my telecom sim is working and report back.

Browser faster and smoother. Nz telecom sim no problem. all good so far!

hmm...wiifi keeps dropping out...seems to be a common ICS problem - have done a factory reset and now reinstalling everything from backup - what a pain

I have not had either of those problems (wifi dropout and google store)

Your tip about needing quick finger work is absolutely correct.

So after waiting for months for ICS and putting up with my Galaxy Tab 10.1 running like a snail I decided the follow the steps above to put the legit ICS version on.

Took 10mins and now my Tab runs so much better. Its actually usable now!!! It's only taken 11 months from when I purchased it.

So as an iPhone user my impression of Android has been boost quiet a lot. Its as snappy and responsive as iOS. But my opinion of Samsung has hit rock bottom. I will never buy another one of their products. People like to talk down Apple but damn when they release an iOS update it is world wide not country by country and no country is left out like Samsung has done to NZ.

After sales support will always be a deal breaker. If you offer none it says you just wanted my money and don't want my return business which is a shocking business model for anyone to run. I completely understand why Apple are so protective over their products now cause it only takes one company like Samsung to burn a products image.
shame on you Samsung. shame shame shame!

I have not had any wifi issues yet. I've only had a wee play with it so far this morning so I am still amazed at the difference.

What made the wifi issue stand out the most? Like is there something I can try doing to see if its affecting mine too? Actually I guess I can just copy some tv shows to it over wifi and see how it goes. How often was it dropping out for you?
