Barrabas: Ok so i admit to being non techy compared to most here.
My wife is totally unimpressed that i've bought a new tablet and she can't watch Coronation St on it using On Demand.
She now thinks i'm an even bigger twit than before.
Can i fix this issue or am i stuck with it?

The simplest way would be to install the latest flash .apk and the firefox beta browser.  You can do this right from a stock nexus 7, and tvondemand will work from the firefox browser.  Instructions can be found here.

N7 unboxed, unlocked, rooted, CWM Touch recovery and custom MoDaCo JR6 firmware installed.

Nice little device, very snappy.

Does the N7 need to be rooted for USB host mode, so it can be used with apps like DSLR controller (Canon DSLR -> Android app)?

Or is it just certain things like external HDDs that require it to be rooted?

Mounting drives requires rooting. USB Host mode for other devices doesn't.

ASUS 16GB Google Nexus 7" Tablet
$299 including shipping to NZ - I think it's only $1 above the allowed untaxed limit for customs (a bit or a risk.)

I'd say you'd have pretty good odds of customs picking that one up. B&H unfortunately insist on using the more expensive shipping methods. Given the delicate nature of a lot of what they sell, that's probably fair enough.

You mean $299 USD?

By my calcs: 315(NZD) + $50 = $365NZD

Still probably worth it though, got three laptops off B&H in the past.   They are excellent to deal with!

Yes sorry, $299 USD, remember that our mighty customs have their own exchange rate. I almost paid $170 for a $300 USD worth of motorcycle parts. They told me the limit (at the time) was $298 USD :D my receipt had lower total price so I'm all sorted.

There are some remote camera apps out there, but I have nothing found for me yet. A lot of them seem to use sound as as remote trigger, so this is not really reliable.

Plugging in my Olympus dircetly in storage mode does nothing, choosing MTP mode in the cameras menu works fine.

It brings up the galery app and you can preview and import the pics from the camera. But nothing else, you cannot even delete them on the camera. Looks like read access only.

With root you can use an app like StickMount. They notice a new USB device and ask you if you want to use that app for devices connected.

The one if have in mind id DSLR Controller, I've followed it for about a year now, it is a very decent "beta" app for Canon DSLRs

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.dslrcontroller&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImV1LmNoYWluZmlyZS5kc2xyY29udHJvbGxlciJd

After some more research it appears it works very well with the Nexus 7, this is great news!

Is it possible to get "English (New Zealand)" on the N7?

Not sure it really matters much.

If it is less than $450NZD it should not attract GST duties. Used to be $400, but I understand that figure rose with the GST threshold (sure someone will correct me if incorrect there). That calculation should be based of the cost of the item though, and not include shipping costs.

The $298 figure you had before would have been based off what the exchange rate was at the time and how much that came to in NZD (whether over/under the threshold).

Sorry mate, I thing you're wrong, I've been there a few times so, the calculation should be based on the total price including shopping, they calculate it anyway and if the duty+ GST is more than $60 nzd, you have to pay them, this roughly gives you a tax free allowance for up to $400 nzd of total cost

Actually you are right about including shipping charges, I've always had it calculated off the declared value of the goods though (and I've, uh, had my fair share of shipments too!). Wonder if that is because mine are usually being brokered through customs by Fedex/DHL?

Anyways, point is that the $298 figure isn't really pertinent, its about the value in NZD in terms of whether GST import duties are applied or not.

At the time when I had this $298USD incident, the US dollar was strong against the NZD, but you don't know what's gonna happen by the time your shipment arrives to NZ, so I just use it as a measuring point to avoid the hassle, anything under 298 (lol) is probably safe unless the USD goes stronger against NZD.
