One of the local bridges near where I live (Waipuna Bridge) is closed for a few weeks for some widening work.

This isnt a little bridge, its the main one connecting Auckland East with the city, and must carry at least 30k+ vehicles per day.

Anyway I keep forgetting its closed and end up having to go the long way to the motorway.

I notice the green and red lines on google nav, but was wondering why they dont show road closures?

It gave me an idea for a feature in google nav where it calclates traffic flow by uploading vehicle speeds from other people on the road using google nav.

This is indeed how Google source the traffic data.

"How do we get this information?
We anonymously combine speed and location information of GPS-enabled devices currently traveling on the road. This, combined with historic traffic data, helps us determine the traffic time estimate. IF you?d like to help make our estimates better through crowdsourcing and have a GPS-enabled phone, try using Google Maps for mobile the next time you?re in traffic. "
