lokhor: My wife's S3 is having problems with locking up frequently and the battery life is terrible (like 1hr screen time before dying). I have done a full wipe and reflashed a stock rom. Unfortunately it's now running 4.1.2 so doesn't seem to be dying rapidly. Is there a way to force it and get a repair?

A few people over at XDA have suggested flashing back to 4.0.4 or 4.1.1 and let it die. That is, if you have the affected chip.

I am getting pretty bad battery times as well not 1hr though. I have installed 2x Battery to get atleast 12 hours. Thinking to get a new battery from one of the telcos

is it actually SDS??? I haven't read anything saying bad battery life is tied into SDS but could be wrong.

I avoided SDS (maybe) coz the update 4.1.2 came out just in time that fixed the issue but I guess the battery was already hammered before that.. but then again.. I could be wrong.. Foot in Mouth

Ugh I just sent a friends phone away, Samsung insisted it was a software bug and tried sending it back reflashed (caught them before they did). I gave them a phonecall and said "I do not want this back until you've replaced the mainboard"

This phone was pretty bad, would corrupt itself after a month ugh.

I think the battery life is separate to the locking up. need to look at what is actually sucking the battery life as it maybe be an app which could also be causing the lock ups

I used battery stats for checking on which app was using most battery but didnt find anything abnormal. I have even uninstalled viber and words for friends coz they are active in the background

thats strange then isn't it, what does it show in battery settings that is hogging the battery, are you in a poor reception area or something

Its more than strange.. I call it super wierd..

The handset normally has 2(sometimes 3) bars for reception so I cant figure it out to be poor reception..!

I too have had an issue with my GS3 which Ibought may 23 2012, I rooted it a few weeks after getting it, just to get rid of ad's etc.

Its a 16gb version, bought from NL, telecom supplied (been running Skinny ever since)

About 3 weeks ago it started getting really choppy and running sluggish, to the point where it would occasionaly lock and freeze, would have to take the battery out to reboot it, before this, since I got it, it has always ran absolutely fine and has been great. On the 7th of this month, I took a phone call, mid phonecall the phone died, I tried to turn it on, didnt work.

Took the battery out, put in a fresh fully charged one I had spare from the charger, turned it on, the boot screen came up and sat there, for 25 mins until I thought "hmm got  a problem here"

So it was conveniently almost a month past its 12 month manufacturers warranty, got 5 year supercover from NL (only cost me 16 dollars)

Filled out the online form, now during filling out this form I disclosed fully the fact that a)it was dropped once, 3 months in, from a low height, b)the silver bezel around the outside has a crack in it by the volume button which developed all by itself about 2 months after getting it and c)that the phone was rooted, but that it has been running fine since being so. I also stated that I have seen similar issues due to hardware issues and that I believe that any actions of my own have not caused this issue.

IUG then referred it to be sent to Telegistics (UGH) I rang them to check to see what they needed, they said that I couldnt send it to them myself (even though the email and offical documentation from IUG states otherwise) they say take it to telecom store and they will send it, I state twice that I bought it from NL, no the 3rd time she listens, says send it to them.

Take it into NL, they try charge me $55 bond, tell them to get f'ed and that I can just send it myself, we argue, they relent, it gets sent away yesterday.

Now, I have rooted the phone, but if its a hardware issue, due to the phone working as expected for over a year, the root issue should not be an issue, or am I just trying to gear myself up for a potential fight that I cannot win?

Thoughts?

I tried getting into download mode etc, and also tried resetting back to stock etc, but the computer wont pick it up, no matter what I try, now even the volume down + home key + power on is only bringing up the boot splash screen (i9300 galaxy s3 screen) which will stay up for 10 secs then disappear then re appear until the battery goes dead :S

cant remember, there was a OTA update that came out about at the start of may (8th maybe), it was the update BEFORE that, so 4.2.1, (feburary it was released) I had to use triangle away to reset the modified status on the phone to get the OTA update

Thats interesting coz according to samsung after 4.1.2 the bug was fixed but I suppose before it was fixed enough damage was done and in the long run.. its gonna die one way or another..

the fix was in the December update, ELLA or C as I recall but it was doing random reboots as it fixed itself, the Feb update sorted most of it with no reboots and watching XDA threads on topic there doesn't seem any new occurrences.

From what has been written there's full SDS and half, full nothing boots half you get into Download mode and it will show status as modified even if it wasn't.

I'm guessing you have tried recovery (volume up + home + on/off)
