Hi for various reasons I do not use the Gmail app.

I have tried to set gmail as active exchange on the Email app but "unable to find server". Is this only a problem on jelly bean?

The settings on the internet says
Domain\Username:          [blank]\username@gmail.com
Password:                       password
Server:                           m.google.com
Check use SSL
Uncheck  use certificate

But it cannot find the server

Any ideas what's the problem?

[I am presuming if it can find the server it will push?]

Thanks

I don't know if this'll fix it but do you have IMAP turned on with your Google account?

I'm running a nexus 4 (4.2.2) and setting gmail up took 20 seconds. Username and password.

I'd take an educated guess and say its a setting in your gmail.

found the answer. I'm three weeks late.

Google stopped signing new devices from 31 jan 2013

I used to use ActiveSync using the built in Email client for my gmail account as it's a vastly superior option to the built in Gmail app.

I had to stop doing this a few months ago after it suddenly started becoming a massive hit on battery life for unknown reasons.

Google have recently stopped supporting Exchange ActiveSync connections for GMail. They already support IMAP, which is a proper standard and should be push capable.

If you want to use the standard email app, turn on IMAP access in your GMail account and set up your phone to access it that way. This is also a good way to access your GMail account in a desktop mail client (e.g. Outlook, Windows Live Mail, Mozilla Thunderbird).
