You can root via the Root De LA Vega method and not trip Knox. But you can't flash a recovery or custom rom though. Will just be a stock rooted rom. Which is fine for me. Especially with Wanam's Xposed app which let's you load some cool tweaks and customizations.

nakedmolerat: To those who have Note 3 from 2Degrees - no luck getting 4G yet?

No only response I have had from 2degrees is to get telecom to flash their rom onto the phone and Samsung's response is flashing is not an option as the note 3 is specific per carrier and buy it from the correct carrier next time.

If Samsung's official response is that the Note 3 is specific to a carrier, I think the commerce commission will want to have words about that... Locking a phone to a carrier is illegal except where it's as a result of the carrier subsidising the phone on the expectation that your ongoing revenue will make up for that.

I can't see why the 4G spectrum specifically would be subject to different rules.

(As an aside, I think Telecom 4G probably will be enabled in a future update, but just making the comment that it's not sufficient to say "the phone is specific to a carrier".

Hi
My phone has 2Degrees NZ firmware on it which does not allow me to use it on Telecom 4G is there a way to get the firmware changed to the Vodafone NZ or Telecom NZ firmware so I can use the Telecom 4G?

Regards

Dion

Welcome to Samsung Customer Contact Center. We thank you for your interest/ valuable feedback. Please find hereafter, our response.

Thank you for your email Dion. Unfortuntaely you can not change the firmware on our phones to another provider. Each network provider came out with their own variant of the phone which has been customised specifically to run off their network. If you are wanting to use the Telecom 4G network you would need the Telecom variant of the Note 3.

It's not locked just some features are disabled 2Degrees don't support, COMCOM will not even touch it and advise you should have purchased the handset from the correct carrier

This is the same reply I had when I emailed Samsung. No update to fix.

Then I wrote an angry email blaming them for not distinguishing the variants clearly on the box. And they replied that there will be an update which will enable 4G on telecom but unknown when released.

Doesn't give much confidence in a company with support like this

Of course it's locked. How many features does one have to remove for it to count as a lock? If you can't access data services at all but can call and text is it locked? What about if you can only call on another network, but no data or texting? Would you still say that phone isn't locked? The fact is that Voda and 2D are selling a phone which is hardware capable of Telecom 4G, but software locked out.

Like I said, I'm pretty sure it's an inadvertent lock which will be removed, but it's definitely still an artificial lock.

If the phone has the correct region firmware to begin with, Odin should flash the TNZ fine. I say "should" because it's not always a given. Before attempting the flash, make sure you have a copy of the current working FW, just in case the flash fails.

If you have a Note from a different region though, it's unlikely that flashing the TNZ ROM will succeed and you'll soft brick your device, so again, make sure you have a copy of your current FW before attempting.

Flashing a modded rom with a modded bootloader has been the saviour of many an unlucky Note 3 owner's bacon but bear in mind, a modded bootloader WILL trip the Knox warranty void code so think hard before attempting.

HTH.
Cheers,
R2.

Even flashing a legit Rom is known to trip Knox what is the main issue I would just flash the Vodafone firmware into it otherwise

Interesting. Do you have a link that I can have a look at? I haven't come across anything on XDA that references legit ROMs causing Knox to trip, although to be fair, I haven't been specifically looking for that behaviour. If it's true, then in theory Knox is somehow capable of monitoring the actual content of firmware, not just its regionality - I believe the hardware itself is identical across the international SM-N9005 handsets.

TIA,
R2
