Mine lags very occasionally. I've taken all the Samsung apps and all kinds of crud off it though, which may help. I can't remember what I used but this may do it well.

If I want to try out a ROM how do I make sure I can get back to where I am now? I can do a titanium backup, then a full backup with Nandroid. Is that all that's required?

The Echoe ROM I'm considering trying needs a modem update. Does the Nandroid backup cover that as well?

Full nandroid is all you need, but always handy to have a Titanium in case you decide to go onto another ROM. Make sure your Nandroid is backed up somewhere where you can find it, like ext SD card.

You can always get back to stock through ODIN or a nandroid backup so you have nothing to worry about   Im using echoe at the moment, I was on echoe stock and then decided to try echoe themed, I dont really like the themed one   Im not too sure what the slim one removes either   Echoe is probably one of the best 4.3 touchwiz roms there is,   However ive noticed sometimes it wont boot and stays in the samsung galaxy s4 screen, holding the power button or pulling the batery fixes it though (im not sure if thats related to echoe or just the fact that im using a non stock rom) Also sometimes i think the screen goes off and wont come back on   You also need to flash a modem as the older 4.2.2 ones dont work too well   Google edition 4.4 will be good as it is backed by samsung and google, I dont think cyanogen is as great as it used to be, havnt heard much about it on the s4     I am just about to try this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2250824 Its a pre rooted stock samsung 4.3 rom with knox removed which sounds good

Will let you know how it is

Thanks Yab :) I'm not really bothered by 4.3, no huge gains, but 4.4 sounds useful. Echoe 4.4 is based on google edition so it should be pretty solid too in theory, but using the pure google edition is just a bit more piece of mind as it comes from more of a trusted source. Tried any 4.4 roms?

4.4 is still very new and has some issues with WIFI?WIDI, and a few more I can't recall, oh yes random FC's but I think those are being tracked down

I've tried Jamals AOSP and GE Kitkat and its fast but had some of the issues above, he ported the AOSP.

broodplank has an AOSP 4.4.2 he's developed from base so its in original section, I was on that for a week its very fast and getting quick updates because broodplank is out of work at moment.

There is a few CM11 versions coming through, and an official nightly which I haven't tried you'll find a couple in the original development thread.

None have knox so don't worry but you may need to check your custom recovery for CM11 as they suggest latest CWM .

Once 54.4 is released to manufacturers you will see some good custom Sammy roms but at moment only CM and AOSP which laack the bells and whistles like air view etc etc.

I've been jumping all over the place lately so what I do is nandroid backup CM11 , AOSP and a sammy 4.3 then when they update I just save what I'm on and restore the CM11 or aosp and update.

I save to ext sd but I have a couple on hard drive, either copy across or download S4 Toolkit as it does it for you and a lot of other stuff (sorry no links but its on xda.

To sum up, 4.3 seems really laggy compared to any of the 4.4.1/2 roms but the 4.4 ones lack the glitter. I would suggest try CM11 nightly's and also broopdplanks 4.4.2 as they seem the pick of the bunch

ok some links

S4 toolkit

Broodplank 4.4.2

CM 11 Nightlies (official)

both Roms original development. I see the ports of the GE roms are still having reboot issues which can be annoying, mine happened whilst in pocket or overnight so wasn't a problem.

Thanks Jeff, much appreciated. I wonder if I'm better off waiting until the official Samsung 4.4.2 comes out then waiting for someone to remove knox and pre-root it. Probably a safer bet, I don't really want to mess with my phone all that much.

Do a nandroid backup to ext sd then do a full wipe flash one of the 4.4.2 roms and see what you think, you can always just backup that as well and then restore back to where you want without losing anything that way you can see if it is what you will like, if not just wait for sammy roms, thats basically what I do as the CM/AOSP are good to try but I'm a sammy rom person

I'm on Echoe 4.4 it seems to be running well. Been a while since running a non Sammy ROM. and it is running baseband MJ5, Not sure if Echo flashes a modem. Anyone on Echoe and getting 4G? Under the settings, it only shows 2g,3g,4g. Mine's on 4g and usually on H+. Haven't seen a 4g icon yet, and i know Hamilton has 4g at the stadium and mystery creek though never usually around those places. Any 4g in the city?

Performance is very smooth, all my usual apps run fine with no issues. Not sure how long Ill stay on this as I do prefer a sammy rom.

On this page it says

"Nandroid simply backs up system and data. it does NOT back up your kernel or modem."

How do I back up the kernel and modem? Or do I just flash "I9505XXUEMJ5_I9505TNZEMJ4_TNZ.zip" with Odin then do a nandroid restore?

Interested to try Echoe 4.2, but only if there's zero risk of damanging my phone and no risk of not being able to go back.

Why do you guys like Samsung ROMs? Do you mean Samsung based but with bloatware gone and Knox removed?

I've noticed a few posts mentioning "stock roms with knox removed". Just to be perfectly clear, removing knox is more than just removing the knox app. The custom roms based on stock without knox (echoe, omega etc) have been modified to work on the older non-knox bootloader.

I know this is probably understood already, but I just wanted to make sure it's clear that the issue with knox is that it is part of the bootloader, rather than just an app.

Edit - Knox bootloader is present in any firmware from 4.2.2 onwards with the build XXUDxx (XXUBxx is non-knox)

Thanks for making the clarification, I'm sure someone will benefit from it. I didn't even know there was an app, though that makes sense, it's the underlying mechanism that I was concerned with.
