Topic # 138779 16-Jan-2014 13:34 Send private message

I've been all over the internet for days and I can't find a working link for a BUJP5 modem.  I want to flash with Odin as I'm having trouble with CWM.  So I need a tar file.  Please somebody help!
Or, if anyone knows of a good modem for Vodafone/Two Degrees in more rural areas.  Have tried several but no luck yet.
For some reason CWM is not behaving since flashing some roms, and bootlooping and having to do EZBase from nitr8 (worked a treat).
I've scoured XDA, though its huge so could have missed, checked samfirmware/sammobile etc, clicked on a lot of dodgy looking links....
Thanks in advance.

Will look what I have at home, but I threw JVT at last time as rubbish signal in North Kaiapoi (sometimes 0 bars have to walk to the front door to use it) and it seems to cope a bit better than previous ones where I had to face the right place in the right spot.

Couple of closed threads if you search i9000 with a similar discussion :)

I may end up going back to good ol gbread. Cyanogen was semi-fine for 4.1 flat, but 4.2 and 4.3 (yeah i was stupid) seem to cripple it a lot more now :( I get a lot of out of RAM issues with apps constantly restarting causing the whole phone to bog down to a crawl, have to keep flushing davlik etc too. Anything below 45MB free seems to kill it quicksmart.

the modems are here but in Zip format so they can be flashed through CWM recovery.

You can download a converter to change to tar if you so desire but I'm not sure its a good idea as seen in the discussion here. From the sounds it isn't the modem , have you tried reflashing??

edit: didn't read the OP properly, can you not reflash recovery to a later version

Oblivian - anything you can suggest/have would be great.  The ancient nokia gets 2-3 bars here, but the i9000 gets nothing in those spots, better though up other end of house.  Its from Germany so suspecting modem (although its had several different modems since).  Had tried a couple of Mackay JB roms but tbh wasn't that impressed.  Decided to restore to GB and ran into trouble, bootlooped phone and rescued as mentioned.  We left the EZBase on it (2.3.3) and its actually great, just added in what we wanted.  Just need to sort modem.  Tried using CWM again and it had a nana.  Found Odin much easier and have tried a few.

jeffnz - there are plenty of modems in tar format around, just can't find the ones I want, thought I found one and the link was dead.  Grrr.
As I said I've flashed a few roms and keen to leave as is now its ok.  I have myself convinced if I can just get the right modem on there it will at least catch one bar in the window!  CWM seems to have some problem with the SD card, high-tailed it out of there when I used it last and not keen to go back.  Not sure if its a good idea/possible to take cwm off and reinstall?? Might lose the stock GB... Bit of a newbie...Since odin seemed fine thought I'd just stick to that.

I''m guessing its not the modem and flashing anopther recovery via Odin is a breeze a long as you follow the instructions. What exactly is the issue with CWM as it is usually much safer than Odin which can do some serious damage if you tick the wrong box.

I'd go to at least Jelly Bean as I flashed that on a mates phone last year and it makes a big difference but used a Sammy Rom not CM based.

If you have flashed other Roms did you use recovery or Odin?

After the bootloop debacle it all seemed settled so I ventured into recovery again to try flashing a modem. I can't remember exactly but didn't work and something about the sd card. So then I figured out you can flash modems with odin. I've been very careful and its been fine. However no change after trying 4 or so. I'm keen to try BUJP5 as a last ditch effort. I've only used odin to flash the modems. I used cwm recovery for everything else. When i tried to restore GB (too many issues with the mackay roms and trying to get gapps on there) it said it was successful but on reboot got stuck on the first screen. Back in recovery no matter what I tried to do I just got heaps of can't mount, can't open etc errors. Anyway all that aside if its not the modem that's causing rubbish reception, what could it be?

Always safer to remove SDs when messing with CWM or flashing. To ensure no extra device mount issues.

When you flash stock GB back on your recovery will go with it (Ive done mine twice) but you also need to remember to clear caches and factory wipe when applying new ones too. Or bad things like you indicate happen (wrong cached file versions being used etc)

It may be its not a NZ band unit for the carrier you are using. I9000s are only triband and depend on region as to which HW is included

Well, we bought it unlocked to Vodafone/Two Degrees and we're on two degrees. Its fine in better signal areas. We realise its on 900mhz and can't be used on 850. Just can't understand why other phones get ok signal but it doesn't. Felt sure if it was on the right modem would make a difference. Other people report better signals when switching. I don't know...

found this and gives a reasonable explaination of the I9000 modems , its been a while since I had the I9000 so memory not good but apart from other post i seem to recall it may need to have file in internal storage but could be wrong.

When you flash stock GB you will need to flash this file afterwards
https://www.dropbox.com/s/ha8cbfaw0p3m7x2/dbdata.rfs.tar

The error messages that occur are something to do with the filesystem format and certain partitions not being where they are expected to be. Flash stock, then flash the file in the dropbox link and you will be back on stock GB.

You can then flash a custom recovery and start modding again from there.

Yes I understand what you're saying uglybob but as mentioned earlier after I flashed back to the stock GB I was unable to do anything, not one single option in recovery worked, which is why I used the EZBase rescue pack.

I think I must have misinterpreted what you meant then. What I posted is what you need to do to get back to 100% stock GB.

On some roms, when you flash back to stock with Odin, you will get a whole load of text on the recovery screen saying things about not being able to mount certain paths and it will not give you any "install from sd/wipe data/wipe cache etc" commands.

If this is what happened to you, then boot into download mode, flash stock rom. Then unplug and pull the battery out, put it back in and boot into download mode. Flash the file in the dropbox link and the phone will automatically reboot and you'll be running 100% stock with stock recovery.

If this isn't any help to you I must have misunderstood the problem you were having.

Yes uglybob, what you have posted is very helpful, but the reason I started this thread is I am looking for a particular modem to put on my now completely fine phone. Just having reception issues. Thanks anyway.

The reason I posted this was because you said you were having issues with CWM. Restoring to stock and starting again will enable you to flash the modem from recovery rather than with Odin (I have had no issues with flashing modems from cwm recovery). If you want the modem I have it in .zip format but not .tar. Finding it in .tar format seems to be a bit of a mission so getting cwm working will enable you to use what you already have.

Oh right, now I get where you're coming from, sorry. Tough decision as hubby is loving it as it is. Will have to think about it. I wonder how hard/easy/successful it is to convert zip to tar...

I just remembered something, if you unzip the .zip modem file, there should be a modem.bin file in there. 99% sure you can flash this under the phone section in Odin. Should eliminate the need to find it in .tar format.
