Hi,

Has anyone heard anything about these upcoming phones from Huawei?

The X5 is due any time now, and the X6 in the Q1 2011

I had a chat to the guy in the 2Degrees shop in Sylvia Park and he said that the X5 was supposed to be in stock in time for Christmas but there had been a delay.  That is one reason that they are trying to flick off their current stocks of U8150s.  Plus 2Degrees currently don't have a serious phone for the top end of the smartphone market.

He also said that they were aiming at a price point of around the $300-400 mark, which is seriously cheap for a phone with the specs below:

The X5 looks like an excellent device, having used quite a few of the 2.8" devices I really understand how much screen size impacts on usability of the device.

I am using the LG P500 at the moment 3.2" screen and that is a massive improvement over the likes of the ideos 8150 (which in itself is a nice device)

If the X5 comes out at that sort of price point $3-$400 i'm sure it would be a big hit for 2degrees.

I think 2degrees would do well to stock both of those models.
I would certainly be interested.
A very nice price point indeed for those specs.

lol... I love how they took the picture of the X5 with a "Connection problem" on the screen. :)

Just wanted to add also...

I love the fact that the IDEOS 8150 is stock Android 2.2

I would love 2degrees to continue with this.
Even better would be for the X5 and X6 to come out with some stock 2.3 gingerbread goodiness baked in. Smile

If you have a look at the unboxing review (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgqV4Y4HRso ), it looks like they were having a few issues with the wireless there as well. However that is to be expected of a preproduction unit.

I'm guessing that the X5 will launch with 2.2 with an upgrade to 2.3, and that they are waiting for 2.3 (Gingerbread) to launch the X6. Gingerbread is due in May.

Even if it came out with a price point of $400-450 it would still be very competitive with what is on the market. Especially with that large screen and the 480x800 resolution.

Hooray for stock Android indeed. I have a need for a phone able to display the UI in Japanese, and if it is stock, that is pretty much guaranteed to be in there. I'm finding where the manufacturer has skinned the UI they generally can't be bothered translating it into all the languages and only make a couple available.

Hurry up 2Degrees. I want to get my hands on one.

It looks like it will have 3 physical buttons (Vol Up, Vol Down and Power) with the other 4 integrated into the front panel. It will run a Qualxomm MSM7230 (Snapdragon) 800Mhz processor.

The specs are very similar to the current generation of high end  Android phones.

OMG so yummy Kiss

@InsGadget , that price range is GST inclusive (basically shelf price) right ? I know it's a "projected price" but that is SERIOUSLY cheap FOR that SPEC.

Also it'll be available in shops like DSE ? Or if we get it from the 2degree shop (nvr been to one lol) do we have to get their sim card too?

Man i've been researching the Android OS for a few weeks now and have been planning to get the P500 around February time but now that i see this ! And at the same price range as p500! I think i shall wait till it's out :D :D: :D

Lol no way, i don't wanna deal with re-selling it.
The p500 is definitely still on my list.
But now i'll wait till the x5 and x6 are released.
X6 is prob gonna be too expensive for me. But x5 at 400 ish is affordable.

I currently have a symbian s60 N95 lol. Still a good workhorse and i'm handling it carefully so i can resell it at a good price haha

That's what the guy at 2Degrees told me. The $400-450 price point is what they're aiming for.

The X5 is expected to launch at CES between the 6-9th of Jan.  So I'm not expecting them in stores until maybe the end of Feb.

The X6 has hit some countries - Cherry Mobile has it in the Philippines for 18,990 pesos...or about $550 NZ.
http://www.techie.com.ph/news/no-nonsense-cherry-mobile-magnum-hd-sells-for-p18-990

Even at that price that kills the Galaxy S at price for punch.

I quite like the Ideos X8150 - and am kinda glad I didn't stretch out for the Optimus One - as it seems the X5 and X6 will blow everything out of the water :)

I'm going to dip my toes into Android development and having the OS kept as stock on the mobile I'm testing on is a huge bonus.

I assume you mean asian-market fones? As everything in this world with a battery is made in China :)

They're pretty much all made in Asia regardless of brand.  You'd struggle to find one that isn't.

Can't see it happening.  To make it worthwhile to manufacture a phone that uses 850Mhz it would have to have a lot of appeal in the Americas, where the usage of the 850Mhz UMTS frequency is fairly common.  There's so much competition up there with on-plan subsidised phones, that the X5 and X6 probably wouldn't have much appeal against some of the heavily subsidised Motorola's, HTCs and Samsung's etc etc etc

One reason that Telecom struggles to attract customers is, once again through the choice of technology and frequency, they have limited the selection of phones available for their network.

Doesn't the XT network here uses the 850 band which is the same as the US network ?

If Telecom launches the 850 x5 then i'd get it over the 950 x5 (IF).
So that i can use 3g when i'm in the US (850) and here too (950).

But the x5 already looks so awesome i don't even care which version is available :D Cool
