SouthernGeek: hmmm I really need a new phone and am a bit tired of waiting for the never ending promise of the X5. Dont mind at all going up in price, but there just seems to be so much cr*p with andriod phones in NZ at the moment. Nothing is getting upgraded Nxus S could have been nice, but to many missing features like expansion cards. Galaxy stuck on 2.2 blah blah blah.

If you guys could buy this weekend your first android or smart phone, at any (resonable) cost, what would it be and from where?

Maybe I should start looking at the new windows phones?

Ta

If it absolutely had to be this weekend . . . .

Galaxy S 8GB from ExpertInfotech.  I've dealt with them before through work and getting faulty units fixes isn;t an issue.

It's on 2.2 and there is huge aftermaket support for it on XDA, so you're virtually guaranteed a good 2.3 and possibly 2.4 when that comes out.  Now that we know that Honeycomb (3.0) is purely tablet.

If you wanted to go below that, then the Samsung 580, as the Facotry 2.2 builds are rolling out for that now.

I'm very much in the same boat as you, and after extensively researching all my options (with the intent of getting an Android phone), I'm heavily leaning towards an iPhone now. My wife has an iPhone 4, and I know it does everything I need it to do, and does it well. One of the failings I've found with the Android phones I've been looking at (Galaxy S and Nexus S were my frontrunners) is the poor performance of video capture in noisy environments (e.g taking concert footage). I know from personal experience that the iPhone has no problems with this, and am generally happy with the rest of the iOS user experience. And the Retina display is damn fine too!

Like you, I was initially intrigued by the X5 announcement. I figured I could put up with less spit and polish if it meant getting top level smartphone features at 1/2 the price. But the more I think about it, the more I'm not sure I want to compromise quality, and that is something I feel I'd be doing with the X5 (once again the camera seems to be a weak point).

Thanks Gadget!
Well it doesnt HAVE to be this weekend, and since I am currently working in Nelson the chances of being able to buy something today are slim LOL.
My current phone is knackered and I have the money for a new one ready to go. I have been waiting on the X5 since Jan, and the tech geek in me just-cant-wait any longer LOL.

I believe a couple of OTA fixes came out for this.  A quick google shows that there are a number of DIY settings you can tweak as well.

PottsyNZ:
InspectorGadget: I think they've made a mistake with the P500.  It has similar specs to the Xperia X8 which retails for $360ish (although running 2.1).  Whereas the P500 goes for around $400 at most places and $449 on their store.

Introducing the X5 to replace the P500, or dropping the price on the P500 and phasing out the U8150 would make sense.

Yeah agreed, although I like my U8150 (well, now there is a custom rom on it and it's responsive) it does seem like a phone they could easily drop.

PottsyNZ:
Damager: after the talk in this thread re the p500, had a nosey at the specs.

no way this phone should sell for 450.00 nice phone, with okay specs but 350 should be the absolute limit.

U8150 + custom rom = a phone about as repsonsive as the p500

What ROM do you have?

I've got one myself, at $220 for the phone (which included $150 of pre paid credit), it was impossible to say no!

Hopefully the price is due to  the limited stock situation

I guess it comes down to the features you need and the price you're prepared to pay.

The main features you get with the X5 are the bigger screen, HD video camera, faster processor and flash.

But the X5 lacks inbuilt GPS app and car cradle that comes with the P500.

You can still get a P500 for 399 from DSE and that makes the X5 37% more expensive - I can understand why people are saying it's not worth it - but we won't really know until we see how it performs.

I have asked 2d if I can review it but at this stage I have heard nothing.

Well this makes me happy about my decision over the weekend to buy the Orange San Francisco/ZTE Blade ($330 including shipping). I'd been holding out for the X5 but decided I'd waited long enough, and I can't really justify spending the extra $220 for a bit of extra processing power.
