Does the new firmware completely clean out the mmc and give you a fresh start, or does it simply stop the corruption from continuing? If its the latter, then honestly, I'd much rather have the phone fail and have the board replaced.

If your mmc is knackered after 200 days of misuse, then I think it would be best to let the patient die.

Assuming that the replacements have the fixed software installed and not just the current Vodafone/Telecom/2degrees software.

From what I have read, it stops further damage to the NAND, but doesn't reverse it. There are reports of people still having their die shortly after upgrading to 4.1.2 because the NAND was already badly damaged.

Apparently from what I read, the sudden death problem is due to the security hole in 4.1.1 and earlier, and fixed in 4.1.2. So if you don't install third party apps where the virus could reside, or at least the risky ones, then I am guessing it shouldn't occur?

Thanks. I thought that might be the case. I think people really need to consider this before they rush to upgrade because they may actually end up kicking the can down the road.

That was my understanding from reading on the XDA forums also.

Thoughts on fit for purpose under the CGA anyone?

Well if it dies due to this, that would probably be considered a substantial fault, and possibily gives the consumer the right to a refund, repair, or refund, their choice when the fault is substantial. But would probably depend if you buy outright, or on contract where it was subsidised, where a refund is more difficult.

I have found my s3 on 4.1.2 official, has crashed and restarted several times when I have been doing things like using split screen, or copying and pasting using the email app. Very annoying as my iphone never crashed like this one. Certainly not finding it to be a reliable phone.

I have flashed my wifes phone to 4.1.2 Wanamlite from stock. Be interesting to see if it has any problems. Going like a train after the flash.

Edit: Mine is already on 4.1.2 Wanamlite but is a 32G S3 so not affected by the bug.

That seemed to be what websites parroting Samsung's press releases around the start of January were claiming, but it makes no sense. Both of our S3's were stock, unrooted 4.1.1, running no dodgy apps of any kind and one of them was on a farm nowhere near any sort of wifi, security issues or in fact any real phone signal at all when it died. The other one went a few hours after getting home from there.

I think the patch that Samsung put out must have fixed both the security flaw and the sudden death bug, and people are getting confused.

btw I tried the EMMC check app on my phone when it came back, and it's reportedly still vulnerable. Hopefully 2degrees gets the 4.1.2 release out before it dies again.

Just got back from dropping mine at the 'Samsung Customer Service Plaza' here in Melbourne for repair.

Person who served me reckons they have never seen or heard of this issue before (and said they "see hundreds of phones every week")

sqlpro: integer, you are asking about some video app tell me where is it located I can send it you

It is on Samsung Apps store. Try click on "More Services..." app in your appdrawer.

See if you can find it. It used to be in there for me but since when I'm on 4.1.2, I can't see it anymore.

Try this http://www.4shared.com/android/vX77WSib/Samsung-Video-Editor.html

Yeah that's the one :D

Not sure why Samsung stopped giving this out to the S3 international :(

If that one isn't the latest version let me know. I have it and can send to you.

Please upload to DropBox.

Hmm... Missus S3 is showing the sign of SDS right now. Sometimes it turns off and can't turned back on and sometimes it is charging and stopped on its own. Going to download the Australia XELLA firmware and flash it this Saturday. Damn you Vodafone NZ, never have the latest update on time.

Curse you Samsung, Curse you for this bug.

4.1.2 is available for I9300 on Vodafone (cue every muppet asking when it's available for Telecom or 2D, I have NFI) via Kies at the moment.

NOT via OTA. Only via Kies.
