So is it easy enough to buy the Telecom version of the HTC One X and load the software upgrades that are being released in Europe? (rather than waiting for Telecom)...

At the moment, no. There's a fair few developers working on obtaining s-off which will give you this ability.

Saying this, being part of the TelecomTech blog meant that my unit is actually s-off, got around to flashing the EU RUU and as of today it won't update to 1.29.401.11 because my "software is modified". All I've done is flash the EU RUU and a 20 or so applications..

HTC purposely crippling those with s-off? Uh oh.

Ahh ok, that's a shame. I thought HTC was more open than that...

I really didn't enjoy waiting round for updates to my SGS (Samsung's stock was absolute rubbish at the time of release)... so a little hesitant to not be able to upgrade the device myself. Though I am sure it's just a matter of time.

It's a shame these manufacturers don't just follow Apple's model and give everyone the updates all the time at the same time.

I like having an open version of the device - upgrades easy. Except the battery is poop!

Battery life on 1.29 is much better than 1.26 - assuming you're still on 1.26

SteveON - what's your battery performance like? How much screen time are you getting?

Pretty disappointed about this S-OFF thing...

I wonder how many sales HTC lose over this sort of thing... maybe small in the grand scheme of things but last I checked, HTC wasn't doing that well. You'd think they'd want the extra sales + word of mouth publicity that goes with having the modding community behind their phone.

So now that I have leapt in and got a HOX (Warehouse Stationery deal just too tempting) my next move is for a case. I originally wasn't going to get a case at all because I like the polycarbonate body, but I am concerned about the way the main camera outer glass is pretty much flush mounted. At the moment I am keeping my new toy in a pouch and resting it on it when I put it down.
A search of this thread shows some mention of cases about 11 pages back, but nothing since. What are HOX owners using? How bulky, and how well do they protect the rear camera? The HOX is about the limit dimension-wise to still be pocket-able so I'm after slimline with camera protection. Any recommendations local or international?

I use a Super Shield case off Trademe, very thin, and flexible/droppable

Protects the camera well too(mines scratched)

Very unhappy :(

I've had my One X for less than two weeks, I picked it up yesterday and noticed something rather annoying/alarming. The screen bezel on the lower left side (about 1.5cm above capacitive buttons) depresses with only a mild force needed.

It's almost like pressing a button. It depresses, and makes a loud clicking/popping noise..

Considering I paid $1000 for this phone, I am not pleased.

Will take it back to the Telecom store tomorrow, where they'll probably want to send it away for a couple of weeks, depriving me of my otherwise wonderful smartphone.

Sounds like the clip which holds the case to the motherboard has broken, you haven't dropped it on that corner at all?
