Hi to everyone,

Am testing an HG556a's VoIP capabilities - have got the line working fine, but MWI tone doesn't seem to be working - just wondering if this works for anyone else?

I have tried playing with a few of the settings but to no avail.  If anyone has any light they can shed, would be much obliged.

As an aside, anyone using one with VoIP and with a Vodem as WAN connection (ie. no ADSL) - do you have any trouble receiving incoming calls?

Cheers

Is a NOTIFY being sent to the device?

As for VoIP over 3G there are plenty of threads on here discussing the issue, I'm guessing you're using an APN that blocks uninitiated inbound traffic so you'll need to move to one that does.

I would also never contemplate putting any VoIP device on a 3G connection unless it is locked down to accepting traffic only from the registered SIP proxy. This is easy with Cisco/Linksys hardware (but won't work with iTalk or 2talk), for most other brands of hardware it will require a decent firewall.

Hi Steve,

Yep notify is being as far as I'm aware.  Can't use wireshark to be sure on this device as it's an integrated ATA/modem unit.

In regards to 3g over VoIP, I'm referring specifically users with experience of this model.

I'm wanting to set it up for my folks if it works - they have a lifestyle block with no landline.  At the moment they use a separate 3G router and an ATA, which works well, but I was wanting to combine it into 1 unit.

Under the current setup I use the direct.vodafone.co.nz APN and set the STUN server in the ATA - this makes it work well and receives all incoming calls.

The reason for asking specifically about the HG556a is there is no STUN server setting

Cheers
Phil

Hi Phil
I am using the Huawei HG556a for my home phone lines as well and I dont get the interupted MWI tones either. But on the HG556a itself you should see a red envelope light to the left of the other 3 lights when someone leaves a voice message. That is the only indicator I get with the HG556a

Ah huh!  Yes I have that too.  Just my router was facing a wall so I didn't see it before.

Thanks for that, much appreciated

Cheers

We have used a few of these now for VoIP/broadband clients and the MWI works fine on the IP phones we have tried so far. But no broken dial tone or MWI on an analog phone yet.

The message envelope indicator on the modem does work but as you say you have to be able to see it.

One thing we have noticed with these is they don't seem as fast as say a thomsen 2wire business router. We swapped one out, waiting for a replacement, and the adsl synch speeds were a little lower.

Otherwise for around $40 off trade me they are a pretty good value ADSL2 router with 2 port ATA.

I would say that with the HG556a when you set up the voip settings you just get the bare necessities to get an analog phone working on it. On a Linksys or Sipura ATA you actually have a setting in the regional settings MWI Dial Tone which is what gives you the broken dial tone when the right configuration setting is put in it. The HG556a doesnt have this setting just the red envelope.
