Hi guys,

I've recently returned from overseas this morning, and my phone won't register on XT.

It's been working all through Europe, the Middle East and Australia without issue, and is now only not working in NZ!

I'm with Digital Island, and I've called them. Their diagnosis is a faulty SIM card, but it was literally working 5 hours ago in transit in Australia, and I can make emergency calls OK. They can't have it looked at properly until Monday, but I'm keen to be able to use my phone over the weekend.

WiFi etc. all works fine and I've re-entered all of the APN details without success. No voice or data is available, I just get Android's generic "This SIM cannot connect to the network" message,

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Have you done a manual network selection?

Is 3G enabled on the handset under network settings?

Hi John,

Yep - I've tried selecting the network manually, and all mobile data settings are enabled.

Incorrect data APN settings would not stop a handset logging onto a network, It would only impact data access,

Have you tried the roaming menu in the STK?

Hi Bobby I've had this exact same issue before with the S III when returning from roaming overseas. Here's how to fix it:

1. Open the app drawer.
2. Scroll to the TelecomNZ app and open it. (Your app might be Digital Island, not sure)
3. Press 'Roaming Menu'.
4. Select 'Manual'.
5. Ensure 'TNZ' is selected. (Or in your case if that's not there, choose the option that doesn't say 'Sponsor')
6. You'll be back to normal!

Digital Island seems to be a bit out of the depth in this side of the roaming support.

On the other hand, Telecom New Zealand needs to improve their roaming urgently. I have been caught on this same problem when going from place to place in the USA - works somewhere, it doesn't in another, until you manually change the settings. And it took me a few days before finding this.

Then we start seeing people reporting the same when going to other places.

Telecom, if you're reading, you really need to make roaming transparent.
