I have a speed touch 546v3 , how do I find out what it's ip address is as it has been changed from the standard 10 .x. x.138, I realsie that I can do  reset and start from scratch but it has some specific settings and would like to access the modem without having to reset. i have its login and password. Basically is there a command from my computer that will tell me the modems ip address

hmm if you're running xp, you should be able to go to start, run, cmd, and enter ipconfig in the command line. it all depends on what O/S you run, it also applies to win2k also.

Easiest way is to just reset the modem to a known good configuration.  I know, you have some bits to preserve but that will be the easy way.

I don't know this router but look at the manual.  It may have a fixed device name like http://touchspeed or something.  In that case you can try setting your workstation to an address like 10.0.0.10 with a subnet mask of 255.0.0.0 and try that address from IE.  If that does not work then try changing your IP to 192.168.1.10 / 255.255.0.0 and try again.

If that does not work (or it doesn't have a defined name) then you can set your workstation to an address like 10.0.0.10 with a subnet mask of 255.0.0.0 and then grab something like Superscan and ask it to scan for anything with port 80 open which should find the modem.  If not then set your PC to 192.168.1.10 / 255.255.0.0 and scan again.

Fossie: ipconfig /all

ipconfig is fine for finding out what the IP config is if everything is working.  It tells you your IP address, DNS settings, gateway (ie. router / modem) etc but in this case it won't help as the guy has lost the config for his router.

try a programme called wireshark, its sets your NIC to promiscuous mode (listens to all traffic) you should see some traffic coming from the router, if not try reboot it as you have a capture running and you should see some traffic from it.

Flamer.
