hey im not too good with cars. But recently whenever i use the brake when comming to a stop in my car, there is a noise that sounds like a tyre rubbing against something. Does this indicate my pads are stuffed?

brake pads/discs have worn out which means, the noise is from the bare metal on the brake pads/discs against the wheel.. time to get them fixed asap.

I agree it sounds like the disk pads or brake linings (if you have drum brakes) have worn out and the noise is metal scraping on metal.

DO NOT continue driving your car like that,  the longer you drive it, the more likely you will cause extensive damage and will need to replace disk brake rotors or brake drums as well as disk pads or brake linings and of course you will have very poor braking.

Disk brake rotors can be machined if the damage is not too bad,  but if the damage is really bad,  rotors cost about $100 each (they vary from $80 upwards depending on the car) and you would need at least 2 of them plus a set of disk pads plus fitting

Dont go for a warrant with it doing it either, if they record brake issues they are real anal when you go for the recheck.

Brake pads make a high pitched squeeking sound when they're on their last legs, not a sound similar to that of a tyre rubbing against something.

Hmm....

i've gone past the squeeking sound. Now there is a rubbing sound. But the squeeking sound is still there.

I'd say just get it to a mechanic. Hard to diagnose without actually hearing it in person :)

I'm not a car person either, but I had an issue where the brakes would intermittently make a buzzing sound. It ended up being a bad onboard computer!

That could be any number of things, but is usually not good if its a rhytmic noise with the wheel rotating.

Story is still the same, drive it to a mechanic carefully avoiding hard braking and have someone qualified look into it.
