Over at Brian Edwards site someone responded to my comment about wanting to get SBS in New Zealand by saying:

"SBS1, SBS2 & SBSHD, as well as their radio offerings, are easily received throughout NZ off your SKY dish. All you need is an appropriate $150 box, rising to around $250 for the HD. "

Could any Geekzoners shed more light on this?

Hi,

There have been many posts about this before on geekzone. http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=83&topicid=38469 is one of them.

For more details type SBS into the search engine at the top of the page to read through the posts.

The quick answer is yes, with a well setup sky dish pointing at the same satellite as Freeview and Sky (Optus D1) and a cheap satellite decoder you can set this up.

The specs are 12648MHz
Vertical Polarity
12600MS/s symbol rate, 5/6 FEC

The signals from SBS are not intended for NZ. They could be turned off or encrypted without notice at any time, but have been there for a long time now.

Enjoy it while it lasts.

Not only that, but if you get a decoder with DVB-S2, you can also get Nine, Gem, and Go; for how long, nobody is saying.

There are some decent classic movies on GEM (albeit with bad ad-rot), and I really need my daily dose of Bewitched and I Dream of Jeanie. Nine is just about finished broadcasting the final season of "Sea Patrol" if you are that way inclined - oh - and GEM is 1080i.
