Windows Live Barcode services: create your QR code

By Mauricio Freitas, in , posted: 6-NOV-2006 18:01

I just found out about another Microsoft Windows Live service (yes, still no directory of these services anywhere): Windows Live Barcode. With this site you can create a QR code with your busines card information, or from a free text.

Windows Live Barcode

The QR code is a bi-dimensional bar code capable of storing up to 7089 characters. QR Code carries information both horizontally and vertically, capable of encoding the same amount of data of a standard bar code in approximately one-tenth the space of a traditional bar code. It looks like this one:

An example of business application for this code, as shown in the demo, is having the business card information encoded and printed on the top of the card or on its back. Using a mobile application you can take a picture of this code, and automatically scan it for the information, adding to your contacts database.

Interesting that the demo shows a Windows Mobile application - but there's nowhere to download such a thing - yet. I would like to have one of those. And I would print QR codes on my business cards, for sure. How geek is that?

By the way, be the first to post below the correct contents of the QR Code in this page and I will have an Amazon gift voucher for you.

Right there, Craig... Wow, first post! What did you use to read the code?

I will e-mail you an Amazon Gift Voucher.

i'm interested how to use this, and how to read it off? if used on business card, what is the recommended dimension of the code to be displayed on the card or anywhere? guide on how to use this please?

p/s: Can we use this as our geekzone avatar? This would mean the avatar has to be 114x114. As resizing 114x114 to 80x80 mean it may compromise the "dots" or "pixels" maybe smudged.

You can try other site to create QR codes: http://qrcode.kaywa.com/. They make it in multiple sizes. You should read the link to the QR code developer in the post. There's a specification link there somewhere.

This was the only reader I could find... (non-pocketpc based) (There are a few pocketpc based ones I found)

Can you read the QR code to the right? Maybe you can't, but equipped with a reader, your future Windows Mobile device might! Down in the Geekzone, Mauricio stumbled across what might be the most unique Window Live service yet from Microsoft: Windows Live Barcode. I'm not sure if this

Well, you can try the Kaywa Reader at:

http://reader.kaywa.com

It's available for Nokia, Sony Ericsson and one Motorola phone.

Have fun with QR Codes:)

Hmm, lot of ideas have come out of discussions @ work about QR Codes after seeing this.

Anyone else had trouble accessing the barcode.ideas.live.com site?
Just tried it now and can't seem to get anything????

The Nokia N93 is equipped with a QR Barcode reader that enters the info directly to a WAP browser or to Contacts, and it will be implemented on other Nokia Mobile phones starting January

Is QR technology universally compatible... can Japanese, American and European phones read the same codes.

I made a code with my URL twice and received two different codes! Why ?

How is the information displayed ? Is it just a hyperlink to a website ? What other applications does this technology have ?

I'd love to hear directly from anyone who deals in this area : programmers etc...

We have been working on our own QR Code Generator and we think its much better than what's currently out there. Also, we have an API so you can easily embed QR Codes to your web app for dynamic barcode generation. We have implemented the most popular encodings so that most readers in North America can understand the content and type.

Please feel free to check it out and let us know if you have any suggestions.
