Burning ISO images to DVD on Microsoft Windows Vista

By Mauricio Freitas, in , posted: 8-DEC-2006 21:46

If you are running Microsoft Windows Vista and need to burn an .ISO image to a DVD, here is a couple of handy tips:

- Try Alex Feinman's ISO Recorder V3. Although this program didn't work for me when trying to write a DVD from an .ISO file, it did well to create an .ISO file from an existing data DVD.

- Use the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools. The installer will complain when running on Vista, but just accept it and go ahead. It will install a few programs in \Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools. Open a command prompt there and run "dvdburn [drive] [.ISO file]" to burn that DVD.

And how do you quickly open a command prompt on a folder? On Windows XP you can use a PowerToy for this, but on Windows Vista you use a shortcut: press shift and right click on a folder name, and "Open Command Window Here" will be shown in the menu - this option is not visible otherwise.

Another tip? If you are using Microsoft Outlook 2007, press control and right-click the Outlook icon in the system tray. This will show a couple of aditional menu items, including an option to show connection status - handy if you are using a Microsoft Exchange Server and need to know if Outlook is connected at all, and what transport is being used.

Never understood why disc image burning wasn't included in XP etc, but it's good to know about the Win2k3 Server RK. There's also a cdburn.exe tool in in it for CD ROM ISOs.

Other tools that are useful (but not tried them on Vista yet):

Deepburner
Imgburn
CdburnerXP

Much of the time however, I bypass the burning stage completely unless there's a specific need like making a bootable disc. Daemon Tools is what I use, and it works under Vista.

I use Daemon Tools as well, but it caused problems for me on my old Windows XP installation (and for others as well) because of using some old drivers. USB memory key and card readers wouldn't work at all because of some problems with that old driver.

I've been using ImgBurn for a while now and would have to say its probably the best I've used. No longer any need for Nero.

Their Vista version doesn't actually work on Vista. It brings down the COM Surrogate every 30 seconds.

Ya, Ive been trying to find a program that works. Nero 7 wont install on vista, imgburn will install, but will get write errors about 30% through burning a disk, and ISO recorder just starts to burn and dies...

CDburnerXP wouldnt recognize my burner in vista, even though its what I use in XP

But I'll try the other programs you have listed.

This worked perfectly in Vista.

Does it work even with .bin files??

This is an old post, but was quite useful. I needed to burn an iso to DVD under Vista (Home Premium). ISO Recorder v3 did not work for me (it did not seem to recognize that I was burning to a DVD rather than a CD), but Deep Burner Free did the trick.
