Moving from Telecom CDMA to Telecom XT

By Mauricio Freitas, in , posted: 3-JUL-2009 17:54

After using a Telecom XT SIM card that was sent to me for review I finally decided to move my personal account from their CDMA network to the new XT Network.

A couple of reasons why I did the move: first, moving to equivalent plans I'd be paying about 50% less than on my previous plan - and no term contract!

Second, there are no queues in store now. Moving plans took all of five minutes. I inserted the new SIM card in my handset just after I signed the paperwork - and it was working already. It means my change to XT Network happened even before I moved away from the desk.

Good job!

PS. Now I remember a third reason: I don't need to carry my personal handset and a test handset anymore.

Good to know there's no lag with switching now, I was just thinking about this very issue today. I'm thinking I may have to invest in a new phone sooner rather than later, perhaps even this weekend. I'm relying on cell much more since I cut my landline and it's just not good enough, plus the '7' key is starting to wear out! But I needed to know that the downtime would be minimal as I'll be relying on instant cell contact over the next few days especially. Thanks for the update :-)

Out of curiosity, what phone are you using on the XT network?

An AT&T Pantech Matrix Pro Duo and an Acer F900.

What's the F900 like Mauricio? did u blog about it did I miss it? Looks pretty good spec compared to the samsung omnia 2? It's only the 900 not the 850 tho is it?

The Acer F900 is probably the fastest Pocket PC I've tried. Its screen is really nice too and responsive to finger movements.

This model exists only in 850/2100 MHz flavour perfect for XT Network, so not sure why you asked about being 900 MHz...

Hmmm, So what is your reaction to this news story...

http://www.stuff.co.nz/technology/2566363/Angry-users-slam-down-XT-network

A friend sent me the link...
I think, after reading it, the headline might be more accurately re-written:

"Both Angry Users Slam Down XT Network"

I mean I know that there must be a number of people who had a poor experience, but that story with it's screaming headline and two people quoted seems to me to be a case of lazy journalism...

What do you reckon?

Well, I'd put my hand up as a 3rd...and I'd bet there are many more who are unhappy. I only switched to XT 'cos my CDMA phone main button went on the blink only a few months after the end of the contract period...who says they don' have software switches in products to make them fail after a certain time? Anyway auntie Telecom wouldn't replace it for free unless I switched, and why pay many $s for a phone on a network that's closing down? NOW, I have NO coverage at home in my home office without stepping out into the cold wet winter. NOT happy! Leading edge in Silverdale have been very close to useless in getting back to me with any explanation or help with coverage or the Samsung PC utility which crashes all the time. But they only mimic Telecom themselves, from whom I get the same treatment.
I suspect the truth is they don't give any performance data on the various phones...and I expect they are not all equal. What happened to phones with antenna? I suppose they are not 'PC' as they remind us all that we are frying our brains with ANY cellphone we buy.
