The Broadband game in NZ

, posted: 16-Mar-2008 21:21

Broadband in NZ is a bit sad, it's like expecting a decent game of rugby in a field that is 4m by 2m, no good for a passing game or putting up a decent punt.  NZ is playing the catching up game, which is going slower than a game of test cricket with no beer sales.  Waiting for the 2010 dream.

Syntax errors of communication

I have been thinking about the helpdesk people and the issues and stress around problems caused by syntax errors when communicating your problem. Caller calls IteamA, when it's known as ItemB. And all the time, the caller has to keep carm (without being rude or sarcastic or arrogant) with no internet and a 20min helpdesk wait to fix the issue and not to stress out on the loss of conectivity.

Moments silence for the help desk....

TeraCopy - new release

An update has been release to this nice bit of software.

TeraCopy 2.0 beta

This freeware program is a replacement windows copy and move, TeraCopy does it faster.
It is not really for vista 64bit but very nice on XP 32bit.

It does a nice job of reading from some of the older cdr that windows freaks on.

AOC 212Va Monitor review

, posted: 2-Mar-2008 17:12

Well I blue the unpacking,  just did quite get it together for that moment. So no images, sorry,

Assembled it, no hassles  and connected it via DVI to a  HD2600xt DVI port.  My desktop is at 1680x1050 with a clear carm image, none of the flicker that crt monitors get. The LCD screen lag, that some older monitors have, has been reduced to near nothing.

I like how I can open a PDF document in a facing format (
side by side) and it's easy to read. It is like it is a normal book, you can see both sides of the page, collecting the information is the traditional way of books.

Gameing is good, COD4, BF2, Supreme Commander all look very big.

Movies/TV/video all look great, especially the DVD quality stuff.  smplayer has nice filters to deblock + deburing and that fixes any stretched pixels issues, even the youtube downloads look as good as TV.

The sound quality is good, not 2.1 but not at all tinny.

I discovered that I can have two computers plugged into the one monitor,  I have my vista box connected to the DVI port and the xp box connected to the VGA port. The AOC has a source button on the front, so I can swap between the two computers.

The vista box has a very clear image compared to the XP image, but the XP image might be weak, as I run the VGA into a splitter to drive up to 4 other monitors up to 25m apart. A choice of monitors is nice, but due to the splitter degrading is doesn't look too hot, can't be bothered with a direct vga test as my media-center is not like that.

The AOC 212Va Monitor, 22" LCD, 1680x1050, DVI, Speakers, Silver. It has a 3year warranty and around the $400. Shipping was fast but the Courier in my area is lame, I was home but they just left a card in the letterbox... *grrrr @ NZCouriers*

I am saving for a Digital TV decoder so I can watch all the FreeView TV and a 2nd 320g HDD (+3rd,+4th). *sounds of dreaming*

Google or Yahoo or Microsoft, which one is for me

, posted: 1-Mar-2008 01:27

Well, I think I'm a bit of a Google chap, I like what they are doing and on the whole there ethics and privacy issues are well managed. Yahoo is ok, they have had a few issues regarding ethics (points at guy in jail in china), Microsoft, it's just so big, the ethics are very professional (kind of neutral) and as for privacy issues, well they are so very big.

So with this mindset I have most time for google, with its apps like the doc's, presents, calender, bookmarks and the list goes on. It's not quite got the offline thing happening, but that will happen with time.

I liked flickr, but I feel yahoo broke it for me, most of the other yahoo stuff I have seen left me feeling locked down, it seemed to be inflexible and cluttered. But they are becoming more social, which is a hard thing to do with out someone else's model. But like google they are make the changes.

Microsoft, well I'm holding back on using it too much, the OS is nice and well they have some really nice stuff but in the present time they have nothing the compels my use.

Still another yeah and the whole picture could change.
