Just for fun here are some speed tests conducted last night just east of Auckland City. Around 8:30pm neither Vodafone nor Telecom are that impressive but after midnight things get more interesting.

iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS are perfect for Telecom's new WCDMA 850MHz XT Network. You'll get fast nationwide 3G coverage all through New Zealand and all you need is a Telecom Prepaid or Contract SIM Card.

Just put your Telecom SIM Card in your iPhone and you can start calling and texting. If you want mobile internet and MMS you'll need to enter the settings below.

Vodafone has iPhone suitable 2100MHz 3G coverage in most New Zealand towns and cities. However the dirty little secret they don't publicise is that their nationwide 900MHz 3G Broadband Extended network doesn't support iPhone leaving you with dial-up speed GPRS if you venture too far out of town.

Any iPhone will work just fine on 2degrees GSM network, you'll get decent EDGE speeds and great battery life in main centres but fall back onto Vodafone's slow GPRS network everywhere else.

Data currently costs 50cents/MB making 2degrees unsuitable for mobile internet and it's recommended you call Customer Care on 0800 022 022 and disable mobile data and only use your 2degrees SIM card for cheap calling and texting. You can still use WiFi when available.
