Yesterday was an important day in the now seven year debate about mobile termination rates in New Zealand. The Minister accepted a recommendation from the Commerce Commission that the Commission should have the power to set the fees that operators charge each other for sending calls and texts between their networks.*
Next the service will be formally regulated with a change to the law, and then the Commission will embark on the process of actually figuring out what prices and other te (read the entire post)...

Minister recommends regulation - Vodafone's response

Vodafone is disappointed the Minister has decided to regulate rather than to accept an industry solution that would have delivered lower mobile termination rates sooner.
Tom Chignell, GM of Corporate Affairs, says the New Zealand mobile telecommunications market is dynamic and active, and to further regulate at this point would only interfere in what is proving to be the most competitive part of the overall telco sector.

Vodafone is of course disappointed with the Commission's reconsideration report. Undertakings have been part of the Telco Act since 2006 but the Commission has yet to accept any commercial offers from the industry.
The Undertakings generate lower termination rates sooner than regulation, with price cuts from October this year rather than at the end of yet another long period of debate.
2degrees is not having any trouble competing, so the Commission's efforts t (read the entire post)...

And so here we are again. A recommendation from the Commission on what to do about mobile termination rates is looming and the Minister once again will have to make a call.
Given the Minister sent back the last recommendation (not to regulate but to accept the Undertakings offered by Telecom and Vodafone) it seems likely the Commerce Commission will take the hint and call for regulation.
So let's have a look at the actual outcomes on offer here: what will regulation give us (read the entire post)...

The Minsiter of Communications has just released this statement - we'll have a response shortly.
