Baa Camp attendees: please help edit the Wikipedia page

, posted: 5-FEB-2007 11:37

BlackSheepNoticed that the Wikipedia article on the Kiwi Foo Camp, as linked to from the main Foo Camp entry, was marked for speedy deletion. The talk page says it's because it's an empty page... and so it was.

I've edited the page now and added some text to it, but I'm not a seasoned Wikipedia article writer so the entry needs fleshing out much more. With any luck though, it should stop the deletion.

Since it was such a good event and one that you really wouldn't expect to be held in New Zealand, I think having a mention in Wikipedia is a good idea. Also, it fits in with what we talked about over the weekend so... how about it, everyone? Log in and add stuff, yes?

Maybe a list of the sessions would be an idea. Did anyone save the sheets of paper?

What about a link to the page from here?

Author's note by juha, on 5-FEB-2007 12:33

Doh. Link added - thanks.

Comment by Russell Brown, on 5-FEB-2007 13:42

I created it and gave it some text, but through some Wiki-weirdness, the text disappeared when the "speedy deletion" message appeared. So thanks for putting something there. I'll chip away at it today and tomorrow.

That sucks. Wikipedia deleted the article even though it was being actively written and edited.

Comment by freitasm, on 5-FEB-2007 17:05

I've added the "{{holdon}}" tag, which indicates this is a work in progress and should not be deleted...

Good for whoever put the text in the article discussion explaining it.

Comment by Russell Brown, on 5-FEB-2007 17:34

Both Juha and I added the tag as requested, and were progressively editing and adding to the text. We both justified the article in talk - and it didn't seem to make a blind bit of difference. I'm really struggling to understand what's gone on here.

Author's note by juha, on 5-FEB-2007 17:42

Yeah, I don't see why the article was deleted, especially on the wrong grounds. Anyway, the skeleton is up again, courtesy of Google's excellent desktop search cache. :)

Comment by freitasm, on 5-FEB-2007 18:10

I've added {{hangon}} again and wrote a justification...

check out the talk page... you are being accused of spamming LOL

Worth blogging about the comments from that uninformed government person?

Comment by David Gerard, on 8-FEB-2007 22:15

The problem is that, as a top-10 website anyone can edit, Wikipedia gets UNBELIEVABLE amounts of spam and crap. Thousands of articles are created every day, and over half are shot on sight. So my apologies if our valiant spamfighters monitoring the firehose of incoming sewage get a little trigger-happy ...

A good way to establish notability is *third-party* media coverage. Basically, you're notable if some notable source thinks you're notable. Add a list under "references" with media coverage. Add the list to the talk page too.

Author's note by juha, on 9-FEB-2007 07:10

Yes, I have some sympathy for the Wikipedians. At the same time though, there seem to be some people who are just plain rude, like the ones who accused us of spamming - and refused to say why when (politely) asked to explain.

We'll see what happens.
