Windows Vista problem solving (not)
Thinking I could use Microsoft's problem solving tools for Vista, I head into the Control Panel and try that. I check for solutions to my many problems, just in case something pops up - nothing useful has so far come out of doing this but who knows? One day it might happen. So I report the 91 problems:

The Apache webserver comes from installing the Marvell driver package for the Intel 975BX2 board I use. Why would anyone put an HTTP server into a SATA storage driver package? Only Marvell knows; I certainly don't.
Unfortunately, there are no solutions as such offered for me, but a few hints and tips maybe? Update I just noticed the date on the screen shot below: 31 Jan this year. It should be Feb 24, which makes me suspect Vista's problem solving tool is rather broken.

Away Mode Driver? OK, let's download that. Not sure what problem that's supposed to sort out (Vista doesn't tell me) but I'm all for new drivers, so let's see what it says....

So I click on the green Windows Update link...

Oh OK, so back to the Windows Update in Vista which of course tells me that my system is up to date. Useful. A bit of Googling tells me that the Away Mode Driver is probably the Quick Restore thing that Intel introduced for Viiv, but I'm not sure yet. As for the other suggestions, the upgrade MSN Messenger one is a dud. I already have the latest version of MSN Messenger as far as I can tell and anyway, isn't it supposed to be Live Messenger now?
What's that This problem is being researched though?

Yes... yes... that's good, thanks Microsoft. But what is "This problem" you're talking about? Is it the video driver failing? Something? Hmm?
While I wait to find out, it's back into Windows XP which is problem-free and completely stable on this particular system.

Juha,
Meanwhile... it is going to get harder and harder to buy XP.
Dell is selling it but only if you really ask. And this is on machines with NVidia installed.
Interesting to see how few vista installations are showing up in our web logs.

Made the mistake of installing VISTA on my Aurora machine.
Got Dual GeForce 6800. And the bloody thing just keeps re-booting. Sometimes it might stay for a whole 15 minutes.
Fed up now.

I guess we would be hearing horrifying Vista compatibility stories til next year. Fortunately for some, things are going smoothly. Most of the problems that people encounter when using vista are drivers. In case you're having compatibility dilemmas, try going to http://www.radarsync.com/vista. I get my Vista drivers from that site.

The Vista drivers for both my ATI video board that came with my Vista Ready HP pc as well as the Vista drivers for my new GeForce board both exhibit somewhat the same problem as you have experienced. BUT the cool thing is that I have two identical SAMSUNG SyncMaster 204B 20" LCDs. One is connected via vga, while the other is connected with the HDTV connector. The vga connect is ALWAYS fine whereas the HDTV ALWAYS goes out to lunch every once in awhile. This happens only when screen sizes are greater than 1280 x 1024. A new WDM driver came out a couple of weeks ago from MS for my ATI board. I bothered to install the ATI board, load the drivers, and voila. Now it goes out to lunch no matter what the screen resolution is. Nice job they did eh???

I write Windows "shareware", and I purchased a copy of Vista "Business" quite reluctantly. $200 for the "upgrade" version. I also had to add memory to the computer I dedicated for this purpose (a rather new HP laptop, my only PC fully compatible with Vista according to the tool MS offers).
The install (actually, upgrade from XP Pro) went well. All installed programs continued to work except for Nero (OEM edition). My own software that I sell also worked fine without a reinstall.
I really, really wanted to hate Vista. Especially given that I had to pay $199 for the upgrade that I really didn't want, though for business reasons (ensure my own products function well under the new version) I had to at least have one Vista test system.
The HP laptop I upgraded is still rather high-end; nice ATI video w/dedicated mem, etc. After upgrading the RAM, it has 1.5 GB system memory. CPU is only a 1.8 GHz, but even so it handles the new "Aero" interface quite nicely.
So as much as I really wanted to hate Vista, at first I rather liked it. Even using the extra graphical features, CPU load wasn't affected much (most of the 3D desktop crap is handled by the graphics chip).
Remember that I "upgraded" from the XP install, so at first I did not need to mess with many internal settings; my WIFI etc all carried over.
So then I start digging in. Wireless settings are completely different from XP. Power management is even worse. Custom color schemes and other display/graphical settings are again redone, making it difficult to find the setting you need.
Worse yet, I tried to open a file in a program that uses the standard "open dialog". They changed that too! It took me 20 minutes before I realized how to show a folder list!
Explorer no longer has a "File" menu. Now all of the normal stuff is under an "Organize" *button* that then drops a menu, and after hunting several submenus you can find what you were looking for.
So after some time, I have grown to hate Vista as I had originally expected to. Worse yet, a friend/relative with little computer knowledge calls me for computer help. Nothing new here. Except now, I say "click Start, then Control Panel". They don't know what I mean by "click Start" because, after all the confusion in 1995 about calling this menu the "Start Menu", they now, 12 years later, decided to no longer label it.
So now it's "click the round flag thingy in the lower-right (assuming of course they are using the default settings and placement)...
I'm used to changes in new versions of an OS, but Vista goes just entirely too far in my opinion. I will stop now before I ramble on for several megabytes lol...

In general.. the "song and dance routine' that Vista puts you through is annoying. Thinking that there would be some way to shut it off.. I have continually come to dead ends.
My new HP laptop came with Vista. I'm fan of World of Warcraft and this is just freaking annoying.. do you know of anything I could do to make my gaming experience.. and my boring old day to day living with my laptop easier??
I dont' want to take it back to the store unless I have to. I wanted to remove Vista and just put XP on it but it's practically impossible..
WHAT DO I DO!!!??
I found you through google and just thought I'd ask.

My Vista problems are varied, but interesting.
1) Came into my room after leaving for a period of time (not remembering whether I had put my computer to sleep, or shut it down) on three separate occasions and found
- the screen a mess of random red slashes and white squares, no mouse showing
- the screen display blank, monitor on, tower on, no mouse showing (x2)
All of these times my computer would not reboot (apparently holding ctrl-alt-del doesn't work?) or rouse from its state with pressing of keys or movement of mouse. All of these times I manually cut off power to the comp and started it up again. All of these times the start up was then painfully slow.
Separate issue: Computer will sleep for approximate 1 minute, and will then "wake up." Made sure my setting were alright, still won't do anything differently.
I've got a new system (320 g, 2 g RAM, 4600+ Athlon dual core, NVidia 6150), and these are minor problems, but it's annoying.

The problem IS vista itself, you cannot repair something that was made to be broken, inefficient, virus proned and a marketing gimmick !!!!!!
LINUX IS THE FIX!

I purchased a new PC in Nov 07 with Vista Home Basic and Intel graphics 82945G. I keep getting the momentarily blank screen followed by the message "Display driver igfx failed and recovered." Under direction from the PC support site, I have formatted and reloaded the operating system from -
a. Image on HDD
b. Discs which I made on the day I got the PC.
c. A set of factory discs sent to me by the Support site.
The mother board has been changed. The recommended graphics drivers from Intel bring up the message - "The driver being installed is not validated for this computer". I have uninstalled and reinstalled the original drivers. After all of this I still get the original problem. I am still working through this problem under the guidance of the Support site but my patience is rapidly wearing out.

Hey guys i have a new desk top (really classy set up) with Vista Business - BAD NEWS - WHERE ARE THE DRIVERS? CLOSE DOWN WILL NOT RESPOND - Etc Etc
Have returned to supplier in frustration and asked to intall XP -do not have the time or patience to persevere - will write off the cost to experience - BAD - in retrospect should have moved to MAC.
Think that Vista is actually still in 'Alpha' mode (forget Beta) and using end user experience to modify. Stay clear for the time being!

Hi
I did not mention earlier that my PC came with a single 512MB RAM card. The PC Support people eventually insisted that the problem was due to software and not covered by their warranty.
It had been faulty from the start without my adding any extra software or even installing a printer.
I removed the manufacturers RAM card and fitted a matching pair of Dick Smith 512MB RAM cards and the problem reduced considerably. I then did an uninstall of the original graphics driver and downloaded/installed the latest driver from the Intel site and this time it installed without any problems. I did note that Intel recommend a minimum of 1GB RAM for use with Vista.
I have not had a single problem in over three weeks since. The PC runs a lot faster with the additional RAM also.
I hope this may be of assistance to some of you fellow sufferers out there.

Yeah, I've been liking Vista but it has been problematic with games. I just bought a new graphics card but get really pitiful performance out of it for games. Sure, it makes Aero nice, but the games just suffer. It's back to XP for me for games until things improve (which don't look like it'll be soon thanks to nVidia).
