Apropos that new Telecom logo

, posted: 16-OCT-2009 13:12

Tonight there will be son et lumière courtesy of Telecom New Zealand, as the telco lights up the Auckland Ferry terminal.

Rumours are flying around that this old logo, some eight years by now:

...will be replaced by a new set tonight, plus a whole new corporate identity unveiled. We'll see if that happens, but I've had it suggested to me that these ones are likely candidates, as they're registered as Trade Marks by Telecom:

Really not sure about them. Surely not? They're probably registered as spoilers to hide the real ones.

Then there's this more sombre, straightforward and simple design from 2008, to go with the T Plus stuff:

Trade Mark Device

Err, what is the T Plus stuff? Anyone know?

I am told that the XT network was a taste of things to come, for the new corporate identity. It's not a bad logo, and a variation of it would be my choice:

Tonight will tell, or not. Will update if it does.

Update The lighting up of the Ferry Building was cool, and I had a quick chat with Paul Reynolds about the logo. Most illuminating, I thought. Still think something along the lines of the XT badge would've been better though.

Mauricio has the full wrap on the logo on his blog, and The Keallor's Krowd is going arse-teristisk over at NBR.

Update II Geekzoner Satch is discovering his true talent as a graphics designer:

I'd be interested to see an estimate of how much it cost Telecom to design and implement a new logo company-wide.

Then I'd like to see what return is expected on the indulgence, sorry, investment.

Thankfully I'm not a shareholder.

Those 'lit up fibre' logos look good to me. It would depend on what values / images they wrapped around them.

Comment by Shadowfoot, on 16-OCT-2009 13:42

My guess is the yellow/green/blus are moved away from each other, signifying the seperation.

Author's note by juha, on 16-OCT-2009 13:44

Oooh... Shadowfoot has a point. That could very well be the case.

Comment by Shadowfoot, on 16-OCT-2009 13:48

If that's the case I expect a consultant got paid thousands of dollars for that idea.

Lengthening the green and blue at the same time would give a white T shape appearing as a negative image betweent the blocks.

One question: why?

It will still be the same company doing the same old shit. No-one's going to be fooled by a new logo and think "ooh, I wonder who these groovy looking telco cats are, they must be new and hip with the kids" - despite what they're marketing people will be telling them.

There's only one group of people this expensive excercise makes any sense for. Consumers? Nope. Shareholders? Not them either. Telecom management? No chance. It's the ad agency who'll be doing the work and then making more money out of a bunch of new advertising for the same things they already advertised.
Cynical? Moi?

Is it any coincidence that Telecom's new logo is an asterisk, and Asterisk is an open source telephony project? (www.asterisk.org) If not, they better not ever put a speech bubble round that thing if they want to stay out of trademark litigation...

Crossed lines, how appropriate :)

My response to MF's post:
As an image, the graphic is ok. The font however is not a good match for the graphic, and the colour should be more toward blue than green. The graphic also pulls a lot of focus away from the name - the spotlight effect should be turned down.
As a logo, it passes the test of being recognised on its own merit (i.e. identifiable without the name with it) but isn't strong and simple (think Nike, McDonalds, Apple, Vodafone). It is fiddly, with too much detail to stand the test of time, as simon pointed out.
The XT logo is better, and something closer in spirit and design to this would have been a better solution.

First year student graphics. It's a joke right!

Two mac operators do battle to see who can produce the new Telecom logo - A quick scribble, duplicate it with silver add flare done! Fucking joke!

Two, three, four million? I shit you not!
