Cardboard ideas: Part III - The iPod meets it's match

Not exactly made out of cardboard this time... but homegrown/homemade/DIY ideas for my iPod (again).

Seeing that Apple have sneakily added an internal speaker to the iPod touch Gen II, my Gen I felt sort of lame as I couldn't view YouTube, video or play games without having to use a headphone.

Of course I didn't always have a clumsy speaker on hand... so I grabbed a cone speaker (those standard 8 ohm ones which you can get at nearly any electronics store) and an old headphone, chopped off the earpiece for the headphone and soldered them on to the speaker. With the mini box that the speaker came in, I taped the speaker in and all was done.

Mono sound is enough for me - this really was for "casual listening" and it's loud enough to play for an average sized room.

Then... I really didn't like putting it on the table or in my front chest pocket*... it got really annoying and sometimes I had no where to put it...

... so I came up with the idea of clipping the speaker on.

Grabbed some thin (0.6mm) stainless steel wire (rust proof and sturdy while light enough) and got cracking!

I eventually ended up with this:

It's also double duty too, just as a plain stand!

It will scratch the iPod, so having the casing on is really important (and makes things soooo much easier to work with, being all soft and squishy Laughing)

  • Now I can play video with the iPod standing up and by itself with no headphone!
  • And I can play games without having to have cabling get in the way!
  • And it's now a truly portable music jukebox! (maybe something more contemporary to replace "jukebox"... you get what I mean)

All up... I have some iPod touch that weighs in at 200g and is some 30mm thick (compared to the iPod's original weight and thickness of 115g and 8mm) and the speaker and attachement comes in at under $6!

Not 100% beautiful and also not 100% practical, but good enough to satisfy me until the Gen III device comes out!

* not recommended for anyone with pacemakers Laughing

Just imagine what other things I've had to do to survive through these harsher economic times...

If things get really bad, you could always eat the cardboard!
