Team New Zealand out of the Americas Cup?

, posted: 19-Mar-2008 10:55

Briefly; Team New Zealand have effectively been ruled out of competing in the next Americas Cup. A New York Judge has ruled that, Alinghi, the Americas Cup holders must race Oracle BMW Racing for the Americas Cup in 2008.

The match will be held in July.

Team New Zealand has also filed two lawsuits against Alinghi, one of which is compensation for delays.

{edit} The Americas Cup will be sailed in 2008, not 2009.

That really sucks!

All these courtroom battles have effectively destroyed the next America's Cup as a sporting event.  Now it will be just 2 competitors; what a farce.

Ho Hum, maybe the 2011 event will be worth watching, or maybe the yachting fraternity will just forget the America's Cup and focus on some other sailing competition instead.

I still have the 2 large pictures on my wall which I bought when Team NZ first won the America's Cup in 1995.  What a proud moment that was!

It's such a shame to see the event being destroyed under Alinghi's stewardship.  They make the NY Yacht Club look like the pinnacle of sportsmanship by comparison

Isn't it great to see the America's cup off the water and back in the courtroom where it belongs!!?!

"All these courtroom battles have effectively destroyed the next America's Cup as a sporting event"

I don't think the America's Cup has *ever* been a sporting event. It's entire history has simply been a battle both on and off the water between people with far too much money..

All I can say is good luck to Oracle. Looking forward to a fair and balanced multi challenger race in the near future.

I would love to see Oracle win. Whether or not you love Larry or not he's passionate about the event and has pumped plenty of money into it over the years. That should at least earn him the right to just win it once!

I saw Oracle practising in Valencia two days ago in 40ft catamarans. They have three at their base there and seem to take two out daily. How can Alinghi match that by July 2008? The "Defender" bar at the AC base is open with it's proud sign "meeting point for friends of Alinghi". It is deserted.
