Okta Touch Review (HTC Touch) + month in report
NOTE: I have purchased one of these as my primary phone (replacing the 6275) I liked it so much!
The pics here are of an earlier review unit.

**See bottom for a "2 days-in report"**
This has finally all changed, There is a new slim beauty hitting the streets and it's what we have all been waiting for.
Introducing the Okta touch aka HTC Touch, a super slim, pocketable, high speed PDA device in the most amazing thin form factor...
It looks very remiminicent of the orginal PocketPC phone edition, the HTC QTEK 1010 layout with a minimalistic approach of just a navipad and the talk and hang up buttons as physical hardware buttons but this little honey is basically just tiny! Take a look at the picture below just to see how tiny it really is.
Underneath the gorgeous black rubberised skin is a powerful 400MHz ARM processor running the latest Windows mobile 6. It sports a incredibly clear and vivid Quarter VGA screen (240 x 320) with a membrane touch panel on top similar to older PDA devices though this one is extra sensitive.
The biggest feature is a kit of various menu and imput enhancements to the regular PocketPC experience and the one designating it's name is the ability to work among it's menus and most functions with just a touch of your finger, flick the internet page around to view and flick the contacts around like a rollodex, just flick and the contacts zip along with "inertia".
You can touch the the tabbed today screen for quick access to your most commonly used tasks or applications, type on one of the many on-screen keyboards, the multi QWERTY key, the 20 QWERTY key or the 12 MOBILE key which is very similar to a standard phone keypad and also operate predictive words aka T9 style or multitap.
It also features the famous "TouchFlo"

which is a special "quicklist" and media shortcut for music, photos and videos. To bring this up you just swipe up from the OKTA logo up at least 25% the display and a menu will slide up, to put it away, you just push it back "away".
You can then just swipe it left and right to rotate the "carosel" of 3 options.
Quick links.
Favorite contacts.
Media.
Inside the media section there is a powerful music player that runs comfortably in the background and a gallery for both photo's and videos with some novel ways of viewing, rotating and zooming. Swipe left or right to move from image to image, rotate finger clockwise or anticlockwise to roate the image.
The music player is rather powerful and works similar to the famous iPod.
I would have liked to see more customisation options though, The "quick links" should have really been coustimisable (unless I'm missing something)
Overall the OS is rather refined. sending a contact an email or SMS is usually extremely easy from any menu. just hold down your finger on the contact or missed call and tap "send sms" for example.
Best if all...the classic stylus operation hs not been forgotten, under the snazzy new touch interface and incredibly small size, it's still a regular PocketPC at heart.
NOTE: Images coming!
Form factor 10/10
It's super thin (I'm talking Motorola Razr-thin) and very light and also has a non-slip rubberised surface which is nice and round and operates well with one hand. The bare minumum nessasary buttons are all there and easy to use, Talk, Hang up, navikey, Camera, Volume.
The battery and MicroSD card are securely held under a firm fitting encased back cover.
The tough, "ruggedised" casing is a superb improvment over previous HTC devices which alsways felt like they would just break if opened too hard or if dropped 2 inches.
The display is also amazingly well protected and you would need to be very strong to break it.

Top Okta Boss, Okta Touch, bottom Sanyo M1 Okta boss (top) Okta Touch (bottom)

Nokia 6275 (Top) OKTA touch (bottom)
KEYPAD 8/10
Well it does not have one, but it does have a choice of 2 main "fingertap" keypads available.. the 12 key like a mobile phone for true one handed operation, the 20 key which has two keys similar to some backberrys and the full giant-key which is laid out like a regular keyboard. The orginal keyboard is there along with the popular transcriber.
The weird part, There is a full "large qwerty" keyboard in there which is very nice to use and would almost be my "weapon of choice" but it's only activated randomly? it's not located in the standard selections.
Maybe a password entering interface?
Display 10/10
Gourgeous, flawless viewing angle and utterly vivid colours.. one of the nicest LCD's I have seen.
Media playback 10/10 (partially based on 3rd party software)
The media player is a vast improvement playing a much wider variety of files with good quality results.
it's quite a capable mp3 player too both in Windows Media and the "Touchflo" player which works superbly.
Best of all, the actual sound is not compressed to make it seem "Louder" like very Nokia does so it gives stellar playback quality. The actual output level is good, not quite as loud as the harrier's output but certainly a lote more than most phones and enough to damage hearing.
The supplied earbuds provide resonable sound quality but are a little lacking with some huge inline square dongle bit and the earphone buds are totally copied off old Sony Ericsson ones.
I have used also TCPMP on it to provide a full suite of supported files and codecs but this latest Windows media player does most that TCPMP supports now. Also TCPMP seems to be very slow when playing video. I assume this is a setting.
Sound 9/10
The sound is good, audio is crisp and clear at all times
Outgoing voice volume is fantastic!! Finally a CDMA phone with a good microphone gain! you won't need to shout into this one.
The external speaker alerter is a major improvement over the apache and especially the titan, Still rather shrill but is rather loud for screechy beep beep noises and certainly makes you take notice.
CAMERA 7/10 (2Megapixel fixed-focus)
Still.
Camera is decent, Takes reasonably good pictures as to be expexted from the better end of mobiles and it's well positioned in the case. The interface offers a wide range of user options inclusing sharpness and saturation.. Though being able to save in Bitmap format would have been nice (it seems to have been removed from the release) The start up time is about 2 seconds and shutter lag about 1 second which is average for a mobile phone.
Video.
Records rather choppy "mobile format" videos at 15FPS just like any mobile phone would.
It does however support Motion JPEG video recording which looks much nicer than the usual h.263, or mpeg-4
Menu 9/10
Superb, The touch interface (Touchflo) works very well and the rest of the menus are standard pocketPC style
The today screen is very informative and fits a remarkable amount in the menu area supplied all at the touch of a errr. finger! The ease of the scheduler and contacts integration is superb. you can also assign a picture to a contact and after going to a contact, you have one tap access to call, email or send an SMS.
The is still an "unfinished:" aspect there though and Touchflo could have been more customisable.

Summary of the alerts and time The customisable "quickmenu"

Profiles for the current phone setup Contacts list with nifty touch slider on the right.
Openness 10/10
Data accounts and email are all supported fully as with any PDA device. There is utterly no restrictions on how you use your media plus it supports a wide range of ringtone/alert file formats.
Connectivity 8/10
Does not have WiFi.......
Supports bluetooth for any protocol and wide headset support and also supports Bluetooth A2DP for stereo music support, Excellent!
CDMA EVDO Rev-a for wireless data connectivity giving a superb coverage footprint and excellent speeds throughout.
MMS 1/10 (see notes)
Not supported, Shame the "legacy" client for "lightsurf" is just awful and is not supported better or they simply allowed these PDA devices to use MMS as the actual MMS interface on HTC is also one of the best available and really should have the effort put in to get it working. This is not HTC's or telecoms fault but lightsurfs poor support (what would you expect from Verisign!)
SMS 10/10
Supports near unlimited message storage and runs as part of the pocket outlook application just as every other pda. Text entry can be one of many methods of tour choice and is extremely easy to use and logical.
EMAIL 8/10
Supports Microsoft PUSH email but this DRINKS batteries dry.... Supports pretty much every other email system known to man inside the pocket outlook and if it's not supported, there is sure to be a pile of 3rd party applications available.
Charger 10/10
Standard mini-USB cable, all standard (except Motorola type) mini-usb chargers supported... Works very well. Will also charge off USB when connected.
Enhanced Features 9/10 (based on what how well it does what it can)
Has the legendary PIM based on microsoft outlook and connects to any exchange server with ease it's certain to be a true office, away from the office. Time to dump that laptop and head off to the beach.
Push email works as expected and as it uses WM6, it supports the full Exchange push protocol, just waich battery life as remember it's in a permanent data session.
VERDICT 9/10
Superb phone at a great price. It's pretty much the first phone that does everything well. It's the true convergence of the chunky pocketpc of old and the mobile phone.
Internally it's very well designed, the actual ARM processor for the PDA side is also the actual mobile phone component chip and it gives amazing battery life! If only Nokia could acheive the same result!
Connecting to data is very fast and smooth. Sending SMS is fully intergrated. also pressing and holding the red key gives either a quick menu or you can assign it a function. I have "end data connection" to save bettery juice.
Has a nifty new touch interface for "phonelike" useage but still supports the true-roots classic stylus PocketPC in it's true form.
EVDO is superb for doing business on the move, stuff blazed through in most destinations in the country, emails collecting in amazing time.
I rank this phone with my venerable Nokia 6310i from back it the day, it delivers the goods, and delivers well....
In saying that, it's not for everyone, the lack of a physical keypad and absence of "easy access" buttons might not be suitable for some, remeber you can slip up the "touch" interface or assign stuff to the main screen for one press access anyhow.
Better than the rather chunky OKTA N73 ....ahem, Okta Boss which has some inexcusable design flaws.
Your new best friend..... reach out and touch.
The bad...
RF performance appears to be a little bit low. I may have been cradling the antenna area too much in the carpark though, I'll come back on this one.
No WiFi support which is rather silly. 1 point off.
No GPS, apparently it was not finalized which is a real pity, it could have been the true "N95 killer"
Small battery giving "only" 2 days battery life when used for constant push email or a lot of data usage (I'm talking a good couple of hours and probably a couple of hundred megs) though!
Compared to the older generation PDA devices, This has truly amazing battery life in comparison even though it being half the size..
The camera in mine is rather blurry and appears to have some impact mark on the lens..
Recommended?
You bet! it's a "Buy it now!" rating, I did...
I got quickly frustrated with the Titans location of side buttons so this is ideal and it seems to be very recent technology that has seen the proper integration..

DEAD Falcon, Monster Harrier, bulbous Apache, baby touch|| Boss sitting on top.. Nice phone too but no touchscreen...
*update on 2nd day
Battery life is awesome, 80% after a "top up charge" after doing a pile of Google maps surfing, web surfingm picture taking and a couple of calls and 15 or so SMS.
it went from 80% to 50% today at work while being thrashed.
Call quality is superb. really impressed.
SMS is GREAT! seems just too easy! go $10TXT!
Headset is a pain, watch this space, I'm going to make up some much better ones hopefully for the "peeps".
Pressing and holding "hangup" can close the data connection which is a huge help to battery.
Applications like Google maps just fly over EVDO..
It has a built in "Task manager" which works very well, here is a pic

People keep asking me if it's an "iphone" ARGH!
*End of weekend update...
Camera is great in good light, useless in low light, but the touch is so light I can take my regular camera too and being able to email the pics off to everyone while just sitting there was GREAT!
The 12-key keyboard has the space button far too small, this is my only complaint.
Compared it "Live" to a GSM touch (see review) and an ipod touch.. I prefer mine still... but must admit the ipod is extremely smooth with the OS.
Have had a couple of call quality issues (shrill to the other party) and my display has gone very yellow (I'm a knob, this was that the brightness was set to lowest!). The call quality is mainly lacking is low-end, probably a good thing actually.
Battery life is good if you do not have the data connection running away in the background.
Reception shows as "none" quite often but I have have not had any actual issues yet.
* 6 day update
Great phone, loving it now which is rare, Often I find all sorts of downers to pick out by now and so far I can only squeeze out one "not so good"....
Data is good, EVDO is great, Internet explorer mobile is a great improvement over the older versions but shame it's a bit slow to operate on complex sites, expecially using Geekzone which I think might be related to extra overheads due to "touchflo"... I am going to try Opera,
I have managed to custard most of the file allocations and stopped the camera working due to me stupidly deliberatley loading on internal stuff from other PDA's but it's still very reliable which is unusal, most PDA's in the past crash if you breathe on them. The N95 crashed miserably and never recovered when I loaded two conflicting applications.
SMS is great, so many messages, so many sorting options and easy to move messages you don't want away. to other folders manually. But I wish I could apply "rules" to the incoming messages. IE :"Ex b1tch" and "My Babe" folder sorting for example. My $10 txt cap is almost maxed!
Touchflo and touchcube is great for quick access to the main appliactions and certainly impresses people. I just wixh I could assign my own user applications to the third screen instaed of being stuck with the defaults. but that does not rule out hacking it!
Symbian looks like a slow pile of puss now, Things like instant image thumbnail views, instant reactions to user input. general slick processing power and generous RAM allowance on this device makes the N95 look very much like "yesterdays technology" trying to process too much when doing anything CPU intensive. Even running pure software video decoders playback in Windows Mobile is quicker than hardware video playback on the N95. image handling (I used the N95 card for an honest test) was far superior on this.
Corecodec Coreplayer is much faster on Windows mobile than it were on Symbian and far less glitchy.
I really want to cook the rom for this and remove the stuff I won't use, something that is also impossible on Symbian though do I miss that 5MP camera, just not the 7 second startup time and useless interface that came with it!
*again, update!
Some Telecom stores have an adaptor to take the HTC jack to a standard 3.5mm jack sold under the JMB brand, Great idea and the plug seems as well made as the HTC original product. $19,95.
I have one of these for every brand of phone now bar my Panasonic VS2.
Output is good to my favourite Sennheisers under these conditions and puts mosts phones to shame which have horrible compressed/limited (in audio sense) sound.
Microphone is a bit harsh, Still i'm intelligible very well to the other party and headset audio in perfect, There iis a little rubber grommet covering the mic to direct the sound to the hole and I suspect it's reverberating a little/can't get up that tiny hole.
Bluetooth A2DP works very well. Reasonable range too.
* One-month update.
Still a great device, I have obtained another US touch that was no quite so lucky and stripped it down for a teardown and evaluation.
The construction is excellent, the display component is actually a thick mylar top-sheet "screen protector" stuck on to a second much thinner mylar sheet which is the actual touchscreen. I have surgically (scapel) removed the top adhesive sheet and the mylar sheet underneath still functions as a perfect touchpanel and can be operated with a much lighter press as a result though would not be nearly so abuse tolerant.
the design allows for easy cleaning of the display and it's not prone to dust ingress like the older panels were and if it were to occur, it can be cleaned out...

The front touch screen now has a plastic panel underneath the touch mylar instead of glass so should result in much fewer breakages and be much more resilient to rough "tapping". Aditionally, the LCD underneath is not mashed into the front as well as having a hinging type screw system to allow it some movement.
Very sturdy construction and built to really take the knocks. the entire casing holds on very well, is very rubbery and anti-slip and feels very tough. Also it does not fly to bits if dropped (unlike the Boss)
The exception is the power button and the camera button, these will be damaged if pressed too vigourously and the USB multiport could be broken if abused.
I have had the occasional glitch with the device being powered up in the standby but will not wake up by pressing the power button, seems like the device lock is a bit too vigilant.
The camera menu has a glitch, It does not allow BMP or "date and time" prefixing if the images which is a bit annoying, the menu options are there but it does not respond.
Voice command has a problem with Audio routing, if you get a call in, you may not be able to hear the caller when you connect if you have "announce call" switched on.
The internal microphone is horrid for audio recording, I might experiment with changing this out.
Certain applications cannot decide where to route the audio to, often resulting in clipping or silence until you plug in a headset.
All the above issues are mostly do do with the "intelligent" audio rerouting instead of the older setup of physically switching through a jack plug and not really a fault.
Overall, Superb device, Loving every minute of usage.

Looking at getting one of these next week - what do you mean your display has gone very "yellow"??? Should I be worried...

Hey,
Not sure how to put this, but given it runs windows mobile 6, does that mean no compatibility with macs? Or is there software out there that would allow one to sync it to a mac?
Cheers.

Hi there, nice review - My Sanyo 7500 died in the weekend - just would not do anything, so we went down to the Telecom store at The Palms, and purchased one of these Okta Touch phones. Love the phone, works very well, easy to navigate round - great for mobile email (just setup a dedicated email acc for this)
One thing I would like to find out, is what is the maximum memory card these can take?

The more I read about this phone the more I want to get one!!
I was just wondering though, how come the phone has the HTC logo on it when the ones I have seen have had the OCTA logo?

Had the phone for just over a week. Great phone. Got it for its PDA functions. Trying to work out how to get rid of the Predictive Text entry working as default. Touch screen extremely accurate, even with my big fingers.

I am a mac user is there not any thrid party software out there that sync with OS and Okta touch? This is an important buying factor .....we are not all PC supporters out there you know.
Many thanks,

I'm trying to get one on wednesday or thursday this week. can't wait to get it. I'm using the wm treo at the moment. still stick to telecom, coz of superior evdo coverage and stability. vodafone is rubbish when it comes to mobile internet and coverage. I rely everything on my treo. I won't sell my treo until I'm happy with the touch. buying the touch is like a trial for me. I even plan to get a iphone as well. but I think I will be disappointed by the iphone. cos my treo is so versatile. I will try to post my opinion when I get my hands on the touch on wednesday. cheers.

Do I take it that the screen comes with a protector already in place and that you would peel that one off before replacing it with the one supplied with the phone?

Hello;
I currently have an Imate Jam and input text using the 'letter recogniser' function with a stylus, a bit like the old palm 'graffitti'. This works great. I went into a store to try an OKTA touch this week and found the letter recogniser to be hopeless. Have there been any other reports about this feature?
Many thanks

We have had nothing but trouble with our 2x Okta touch.
Both phones will be sitting on the bench and the next minute the camera comes on. It rings people for no reason, it was sitting on my desk and it kept ringing my last caller.
It has been hard reset twice, hopefully this fixes it otherwise I'm taking it back
Not happy
Comment by Richard, on 26-AUG-2008 16:23
Hi
Thinking about getting the Okta Touch it will be my first pda/phone, it would be used as a standard phone mainly not much bussiness, i really do like it and all of the comments are saying YES to me is it worth the money?
Comment by dman, on 3-SEP-2008 17:43
I wouldn't give it a full 10 out of 10 for the SMS, it isn't as close to unlimited as you would think like you said. As I've been using it for a few
months now, got a thousand or three txt messages in my inbox and it is now moving a tad sluggishly.
So... a 9.9/10 for me ;)
Comment by dman, on 3-SEP-2008 17:56
AceVPD, Telecom didn't not "disable" the WiFi.
The reason for the difference is you are looking at the GSM version which has WiFi while the CDMA does not (although on the plus side the CDMA does have a faster processor than the plainly weak one that the GSM has)
Comment by Wolfgang, on 9-SEP-2008 15:12
Hi there, I can confirm a 8GB storage card works perfectly well (Sandisk Micro SDHC).
Re camera goes on all of a sudden - same here.
Another downside: TouchFlo starts only built-in applications, it's not customizable, I use AgendaOne (calendar, contacts etc) which I cant access using TouchFlo.
Re sync - don't blame the Okta, ActiveSync has been a problem ever since, same than years ago (that's one reason why I had a Palm before by employer got me the Okta).
Have fun anyway!

Hi,
Can I download my itunes music from my laptop to my octa phone?
Comment by Terri Chapman, on 21-OCT-2008 10:52
The word Octa gives me nightmares!
I have been through three of these phones over the last month! All with the same problem "Cluster Fault" - In their defence they don't try repair but rather straight replace but the constant freezing and scrambled words are less than ideal!
I certainly wouldn't recommend this phone....
Comment by fast sunshine, on 30-OCT-2008 19:27
is it possible in any way or form to put these phones on a prepay plan? telecom claim it is impossible and that they must be on a data plan. however vodaphone said the same thing about the iphone, but that was not the case. i have also seen them for sale on trademe where people have claimed they're on prepay

I've had an Okta touch since the day they came out here in Taupo. Handy little gadget, but terrible for texting (requires two hands) and very hard to see screen in sunlight.
Really need the 8GB (or larger) memory card to do more with it. Will be great for watching wmv file movies burnt off the DVD's (that I bought). That's gotta be one of the best parts. Good sized screen for it. Pity you can't charge it while having headphones plugged in.
Wouldn't but another one though. If it had buttons for texting, I'd LOVE it.

I've had an Okta touch since the day they came out here in Taupo. Handy little gadget, but terrible for texting (requires two hands) and very hard to see screen in sunlight.

I have had this phone nearly 2 years, for the first probably 2 months it was alright except for the keyboard... but then came the constant freezing, everytime I sent a text it would require a restart. not only that sometimes it decided a restart would be a plain good idea, it started to lag ridiculously until I was down in alexandra and it completely failed, wouldn;t turn on or anything so I did a complete restore, and for the next 2 or so days it was fine... and then it started again.

The HTC Touch has to be the worst phone I have ever own in my life, continually crashes, always loses its settings, loses text messages.
Very poor for a potentially good phone, sadly this was a real waste of money.

My text and email buttons will not respond and I can not text from contacts or the start menu either.
I have switched the phone off completely, I have pressed the reset button and have also removed the battery for about 30mins before turning it back on, but nothing has made a difference.
Any ideas?
