Why I think 3D TV is just a FAD

, posted: 28-Apr-2010 15:22

A lot of people are talking about the upcoming release of 3D TV’s and how their going to change the way we watch TV and even the way we game. While 3D television looks and sounds exciting, will they really live up to the hype? I think not!

Who wants to wear a pair of special glasses every time they want to watch some 3D television? I couldn’t think of anything more annoying! I can understand why people are so excited about it now, but if you had a 3D TV, do you really see yourself always wearing those expensive glasses every time something 3D comes on?

What’s worse is that you’ll need a pair of 3D glasses for every person watching the TV set in 3D mode or else it will look blurry and unwatchable. These glasses aren’t cheap either, costing at least a couple of hundred bucks per pair; they aren’t the cheapest of accessories. Not to mention, each brand of glasses only works on that brand of TV, so if you think you can just bring your pair to your friends’ house and watch the same movie together, you are likely out of luck. Chances are, they’ll have universal glasses soon enough or at least have a standard of some sort but the fact that you have to put on some bulky glasses really turns me off this sexy sounding new product.

I also believe the companies who invest heavily in 3D TV’s and the content, will end up loosing out in the long run. Big blockbuster films like Avatar will do well, especially on the big screen in theatres, but the majority of the content will be crap. Do we really need to watch Shorthand Street in 3D?

The only way I ever see 3D TV’s becoming streamline and something we all use on a daily basis, is if they can create the same 3D picture without the need for glasses. If this is possible or not, I have no idea. But if that can’t happen, I honestly never believe this is going to take off.

My opinion anyway, time will tell!

It's quite difficult to do 3D without glasses, it strains your eyes, the resolution is low, plus you need to be in a specific place to get the full effect.

I too think it's abit of fad, very cool to watch, and it will be very popular among gamers who have the cash to burn.

The average consumer, we'll have to wait and see.

We just got the samsung 3D 50" LED in at work a week ago... It looks really good !! the samsung demo that we run is amazing... but when you just watch a normal blu-ray its not so great.. So will have to wait for real 3d Blurays to come out...  We are going to hook up a PS3 and have Avatar the PS3 game in 3D on the TV and see how good that will be..

Anyway... Im going to buy one... but will wait 36-48 months for prices to come down..

btw i work @ - JB HiFi - Townsville AU...  Moved over there 6months ago from Dunedin :)

3d will be great for gaming.

I dont mind the glasses but content is the key, not all content will be (and shouldn't be) in 3D. Sports, gaming and movies will benefit most from 3D with each genre provides different unique experiences.  Whilst I haven't seen a 3D sport event but i can imagine the "being there" experience just like being in a 3D movie. 3D gaming will provide an extra level of realism and immerse that game designers will want to exploit.

Producing 3D content is not that expensive in the digital realm. 2D contents can be transposed to 3D digitally, like the current Clash of the Titan 3D movie which was recorded with 2D cameras.  This is how sports events will done in 3D.  Digitally created content, like Toy Story and other computer animations, can be re-rendered to 3D format.

Hardware prices looks high initially but definitely not at a premium. They will come down, manufacturers knows high prices is not good if they want mainstream adoption.

So I think 3D will be a mainstream feature but it won't replace 2D contents, its not suppose to.

Right on the money. However, all is not lost. The 3D blip has got people excited and Glasses free 3d screens are coming and soon. It's called Autostereoscopic and Toshiba are first off the rank. http://bit.ly/adlUFj

So, recommend don't buy now as the tech is fluid and you are likely to have an expensive white elephant on your hands.

The content development is starting, the acceptance is starting, but it will be 3-5 years before we see a similar wave to the HD one of the last two years.

Fad! from what I have read abot Clash of the Titans, the crap content of everyone jumping on the 3D bandwagon is already happening. Thats pretty much what happened last time 3D made an appearence back in the 80's. If we get flooded with everything made badly in 3D it will turn people off and we all know that the content makers just wont be able to help themselves if it means they can charge a premium for it. Leave 3D to the big movies like Avatar and keep everything else 2D I say.

I'm also not convinced that sport is going to be that great either. Rugby in 3D, really?

I hate 3d TV and 3d Movies . They give me a head ache in a very short time and make feel nauseated.

I think they will stay around but as an option but I feel they will be low volume sellers.

One could get real sick, reallly quickly if this content was in 3D!
