UPDATED!! Econet Wireless selling up its NZ operation

By tonyhughes Hughes, in , posted: 25-Jul-2006 07:23

Sources inside Econet Wireless and an undisclosed New Zealand IT company, previously thought to be firmly entrenched in the media and technical solutions industries have all but confirmed Econets imminent departure from the New Zealand telecommunications industry by way of a fire sale of their New Zealand interests.

Recently, from Tex Edwards, Econet’s Chief Project Director:

“The TCF has been a disaster for mobile, which has been stuck in the TCF trap for four years now. It has been one of the incumbents’ primary weapons of mass frustration. It has been a key obstacle to competition, not a catalyst,”

It is understood the prospective purchaser plans to immediately fulfill the obligation of covering 10% of NZ's population with mobile service, to bring into play the governments promise of regulated access to a competitors network (i.e. Vodafone New Zealand).

It is not known exactly how much equipment Econet has acquired so far for use in New Zealand, but the soon-to-be-new-owner has expressed interest in deploying a CDMA solution, depending on the amount of GSM kit it inherits as part of the sale. Should Econet decide to re-deploy any already purchased kit in another location, the new NZ operation could become New Zealands second CDMA network, in the shadow of Telecom New Zealand.

The entrepreneur has thus far refused to be named, and Econet staff have continued their public veil of silence.

The Commerce Commission had this to say:

"It is not in the scope of the Commerce Commision to enter into public discussion of the proposed ownership of a non-operating company. The moment that Econet, or its successor begins to trade in New Zealand, we will take an active role in assessing the merits of the situation."

## THIS STORY IS WAS A HOAX. THE SIDEBAR OF MY BLOG CLEARLY STATED IN BOLD LETTERING (AND HAD DONE SO SINCE ABOUT 20 MINS AFTER THE POST WENT LIVE): "THE ECONET STORY IS A HOAX, PLEASE DONT GET SUCKED INTO OUR LITTLE GAME". THE LETTERS "macS" AT THE END OF THE STORY IS "SCAM" BACKWARDS.

THANKYOU TO RICHARD WOOD AT "THE LINE" FOR ATTRIBUTING ME AS A SOURCE WHEN REPORTING - A LOT OF OTHER MEDIA DONT - YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE.

THANKYOU TO ECONET, FOR CALLING ME TWICE (SORRY I WAS IN A CONFERENCE ALL DAY), AND TO TEX EDWARDS FOR EMAILING ME, REQUESTING A CHAT.

THIS WAS TO BE A LONG RUNNING PRANK/HOAX WITH MORE TO COME BUT WE HAVE DECIDED TO END IT HERE AND NOW, WHILST EVERYONE STILL HAS THEIR BODY PARTS ATTACHED IN ALL THE RIGHT PLACES :o)

CAVEAT EMPTOR, AND HAPPY DAYS!!

THE ECONET WEBSITE IS HERE : http://www.ewnz.co.nz/html/

N.B. THIS PRANK RAN FOR NINE HOURS BEFORE BEING OUTED BY ME.

What spectrum would they use for a CDMA network? 800 is all owned by Telecom and Econet only own 1800MHz and 2100MHz spectrum which are both non standard for CDMA.

OK, on more thinking (ouch, hurts) I don't mind this one, quite the opposite. It's not good to take oneself too seriously :)

FYI I never heard back from EcoNet over this (Tex emailed me, with a request to contact him), I replied with a statement, and a mild apology which also indicated it was just a prank, and that I didnt regret it, and wish him and his team well for doing business in NZ as a much need 3rd mobile network operator,

I guess I aint Tex's friend lol.
