Bitstream adds full Java support to ThunderHawk 2.1 Pocket PC Edition
Bitstream Inc. is adding full Java support to ThunderHawk 2.1 Pocket PC Edition, the company's technology that provides enterprise clients and end users with a familiar, secure desktop browsing experience on mobile devices.

New users can test the software by downloading the 30-day free trial, and current ThunderHawk subscribers can download the ThunderHawk 2.1 update.

The company says that while most mobile browsers provide limited Java support, the ThunderHawk wireless Web browser displays full HTML pages with desktop-level Java 1.5.0 capabilities. Subscribers can run Java applets on a Pocket PC using ThunderHawk , and the applets will behave on the mobile device just as they do on the desktop.

The software allows enterprise clients and end users to read dynamic news feeds, track weather patterns, and view stock quotes and sports scores in real time; access corporate databases to view contacts and update information on the go and other functions provided by web sites.

"Robust Java support was one of the top requests from both ThunderHawk subscribers and enterprise clients,” said Anna Chagnon, President and Chief Executive Officer at Bitstream. “ThunderHawk subscribers already expect seamless navigation, great speed and the ability to find and read information quickly when browsing with ThunderHawk, and now they can also take advantage of the interactive functionality that only full Java support provides."

For organizations interested in hosting ThunderHawk to run secure corporate applications, Bitstream offers ThunderHawk 2.1 Enterprise Edition, which includes a fully-configured appliance and software for purchase. The advantage of this turnkey appliance is that the server software comes preconfigured so there is less of a burden on the enterprise IT department during the installation process.
