Nexus 5: Possibly the best Android phone not available in New Zealand

Nexus 5 not on sale in New Zealand

If Google’s Nexus 5 is not the best Android phone you can buy, it’s the best value Android phone. Or at least it would be if only you could buy it in New Zealand. At the time of writing you can’t. The screenshot above shows what happens when you reach the Nexus 5 page in the Google Play store from a New Zealand online address.

The Nexus 5 is clearly popular. According to PC World Australia, the Nexus 5 went on sale across the Tasman last Friday. Two days later it was sold out.

Australians paid A$400 for the 16GB model and A$450 for the 32GB model. That would make the Nexus 5 less than $500 in New Zealand – if you could buy one.

It’s not hard to see why the phone is popular. The Nexus 5 works on fast 4G networks. It has one of latest high-end mobile processors – a Snapdragon 800 2.3Ghz quad-core. Also inside the box is 2GB Ram, a large 4.95-inch 1080P screen and an eight megapixel camera with optical image stabilisation.

For the time being it is the only phone running the latest 4.4 version of Android.
