Databricks today announced the acquisition of Electric, the team behind the open-source PGlite and real-time data sync technology, expanding its Postgres capabilities from the lakehouse straight to the edge. The integration aims to solve one of the most pressing infrastructure challenges in AI development: enabling teams of autonomous AI agents to manage real-time, distributed state without drowning in network latency.
As developers shift from traditional web applications to complex, multi-agent systems, standard database architectures are reaching their limits. AI agents require rapid, local access to data within isolated sandboxes while needing to continuously synchronise state with a central source of truth.
The acquisition brings together two deeply aligned Postgres architectures. Electric’s technology will integrate directly with Databricks’ Lakebase infrastructure, extending Lakebase's production-scale Postgres capabilities into local execution environments.
For developers, this means a unified Postgres standard, which developers can use to build full-stack agentic applications on a single, open database ecosystem from the cloud to the edge. Running PGlite natively within agent sandboxes gives each agent an embedded database for instant local context reads and writes. Real-time sync keeps multi-agent teams aligned instantly while centralising long-term governance and control in Lakebase on cost-effective object storage.
By combining Lakebase's scalable cloud backend with Electric’s lightweight local runtime and sync engine, Databricks aims to provide the foundational data layer for the next wave of enterprise AI deployment.
