Dunnersfella: It's $99... whadda ya want?

What I would want is tvnz's existing services(like tvnz on demand) being available.

No Shortland Street for a New Zealand based streaming service ... Fail.

Show me any device, other than a couple of TVs and a PS3 where TVNZ ondemand (and TV3 for that matter) are available.

iPad. iPhone both have TVNZ OnDemand, and its very nice.

Cant be airplayed though unfortunately.

Also, TVNZ OnDemand is available on laptops, which can be easily plugged into any modern TV with the aid of a $10 HDMI cable

See this for my thoughts on plugging a laptop into a tv: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/davidcole/8474 (parapharased as: not ideal....)

meh, its not that big a deal. I do it for Netflix, and that is how most people watch Netflix (althogh PS3 is nearly overtaking browser).

I would have thought most people used an Apple TV for Netflix and Hulu.  I know I do.

I do have an Apple TV, but I find the interface on the browser on my Mac far superior e.g. hover over a title to bring up info rather than clicking through on the clunky Apple TV GUI, scroll nicely through content much faster than clicking through genre menus etc

Also the buffering when playing via laptop seems much better i.e. it buffers more, so more likely to keep playing if my connection is faltering for some reason.

(also, I've never tried it, but I understand you can use an apple TV remote to control the basic functions on the mac too, so you dont even need to get up!)

ETA:  speaking globally, browser is the most popular way, although PS3 is close
http://www.theverge.com/2012/12/4/3727556/playstation-3-number-one-netflix-streaming-living-room

"Today Netflix revealed that its subscribers view content on the PlayStation 3 more often than any other device in the living room. Holding that top slot means Sony's console remains ahead of the Xbox 360, Apple TV, Roku's various streaming devices, and other hardware. In a statement, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings says the PS3 has even topped the PC "at times" to become the service's most popular platform overall — though it appears that's not presently the case."

I agree with Igloo being poor. My biggest complaint about it is the pay-per-view sport. It's far too much in my opinion. As someone not on Sky or Igloo the pricing seems more designed to stop current Sky Sports subscribers moving to Igloo rather than encouraging pay-per-view. Although if they keep the rugby at $10 like they did for the ABs I could be tempted... that won't last though although I'm suspicious it happened after the EPL news Undecided

I bought an igloo out of curiosity. The price of $99 with the first month free was just enough to tempt me.

If sport was $5 to $10 a game they might make a few dollars out of me, but it mostly seems to be $15 to $20, which is excessive.

But that is a moot point. I'm in a fringe area for Freeview HD, and the igloo can't cope with it. The freeview website says high roof aerial is needed, which I have, and I have three devices which work almost flawlessly (Sony Bravia TV, Tivo and AerialBox T1020). On TV 1 the Sony reports a signal quality of 84 and a signal strength of 34. TV3 is 23 for quality and 34 for strength. Not great, but I never see any artifacts on these channels. The only channel which I have problems with sometimes is Prime.

I used to have a VANTAGE HD6000T, which worked in town, but can't cope out here either. The Igloo fails when trying to tune the channels in during the setup process, and won't let you progress any further. You can't even watch on-demand content delivered through the internet, you have to tune the channels before you can do anything.

I was also a bit disappointed that the Igloo is based on open source, and the manual says to go to the Pace website to download it, but the form on there doesn't list either Igloo or the underlying model, the DT840INZ.

https://www.pace.com/universal/open-source/request-form/

I think that is quite bad, and I don't think they are meeting their GPL obligations (in my opinion, I'm not a lawyer).

Interesting. I agree with the sports prices. 20 is too high for a one off.

I would have thought compared to a ticket to actually go, it was high, but relatively reasonable.
