I get you about SKY movies which isn't a great package. So maybe you do get a cheaper version of that, though I would imagine you would be paying more like $14.99 quickflix than $7.99 netflix price.

slightly off-topic, but regarding this point, people need to remember that Netflix price is in USD and excludes sales tax.

So if netflix were to launch here and had identical costs per subscriber to the US business, they would still be priced at least $12 (converting $8USD to NZD, adding 15% GST).
In reality their cost per subscriber would be much higher because of the lack of economies of scale in NZ compared to US

We could just piggyback on to the US system but we all know that will never happen ..

the best quality will be 3Mbps I saw in an interview, which should be pretty close to HD unless they have pretty bad encoding.

Netflix does 720p with only 2.5Mbps I believe.

I had MLBTV for a months trial last year and they said needed 3mbps for HD quality. What I found was that the bigger the device you had the more the picture lost it's lustre, so if you streamed to a 50 inch TV the quality was worse than say a 32inch TV.

Whereas with terrestrial/cable model the the picture stayed roughly the same. And the quality was sharper on terrestrial/cable model too. Added to that I think sports with sudden movements makes the difference more noticeable compared to watching movies/tv shows.

The other thing that used to drive me mad was it flicking between HD and SD mode all the time especially between 6pm and 10pm at night. That probably related more to location of server I would imagine.
