yeah, with an HDi box.  The only problem is now and then i'll get that warning about it having to downscale to SD.

Well since composite doesn't support HD that's hardly an issue. Will ask him what the problem is.

correct.  The only issue with that is the message ruining the recording, and having to do the whole thing again Yell

I've run foul of this issue too as per my post here: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=34&topicid=38905.

My Sony DVD HDD Recorder tells me that I can dub a program on my HDD with copy protection on it to a DVD but that it will be deleted from the HDD afterwards. Sounds fine, but when you give it the 'OK' it simply says it cannot burn to the type of disk I have in the drive and to insert a DVD-RW in VR format -- which is exactly what is in the drive.

This DVD recorder which cost me around $600 a couple of years ago is now completely and utterly redundant thanks to Sky and their over-zealous DRM.

I think that is the problem he's facing. He couldn't record via SCART to hs HDD recorder but composite is fine. But once there he can't copy to a DVD. I am guessing the HDD recorder is seeing the Macrovision flag and just refusing to copy. But if he output the recording from the HDD recorder over composite or even svideo that would be recordable fine on a PC with a Hauppauge PVR type card. Might be too high tech for him though.

THe RW disks need to be special largely locally unavailable DVD-RW CPRM compatible media. I've not found any yet locally. Apparently the disks have some sort of unique code that the dvd recorder recognizes, records to disk and then deletes the hdd recording. No code no recording.

Has anyone else found these and used them successfully?   Are they vapourware?

They exist, e.g. http://www.google.co.nz/search?q=JVC+Vdw47Eu5+cprm

Whether you can get them here or not I don't know...

I am totally outraged by Sky's lack of consultation on this issue.  They have made a very significant change to the way in which the MySkyHDI device works and they have not bothered to tell anyone.  What's more, and this is what outrages me equally, is that the older Sky decoder of a friend can still record all Sky material onto DVD without restriction.  So it appears it is only MySkyHDI customers who are subject to this nonsense.

Up until a few weeks ago I was able to record all Sky channels onto DVD via the MySkyHDI box.  But now I am prevented from doing so.  Just to reiterate I cannot record any material AT ALL from:

-  TV1, TV2, TV3
-  all the movie channels:  1, 2, Greats, MGM and TCM

Any attemp to record material either directly from these channels or from the HDD on the MySkyHDI box results in an error message "Copy protected.  Cannot record".  My DVD recorder is a Sony RDR GX-380, purchased new earlier this year.  I see my Sky box is running software version 67.2.1.0.2.145 on 26 August and it must be this that has changed recently and is the cause of this problem.

Someone might claim this problem is because of the HD content of these channels.  But not so.  We have only ever been able to record high definition content in standard definition.  Everyone else can record onto DVD, only MySkyHDI subscribers are being penalised.  Yell

I am seriously considering cancelling my movies subscription.  I would also suggest to potential new subscribers to stay clear until Sky have sorteded this problem out to its subscribers' satisfaction.

Everyone should complete the on-line question form on Sky's website - let's make a fuss and complain about the encoding which prevents us copying favourite shows etc to a dvd via our recorders.
Link to form is - http://skytv.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/skytv.cfg/php/enduser/ask.php

what I found frustrating was not so long ago I was recording the Stanley cup ( sky stopped transmitting it a few years ago so I was estatic that it was beiing transmitted this year) anyway, I wanted to keep a copy (on panasonic dvd rec as there were 7 games) it let me re- record 4 of the 7 games, (2,3,5,6) so they must have been turning it on and off over the 2 weeks

A friend of mine encountered this problem - for FTA channels he found it pretty annoying. Out of interest since I don't have a MySky box, has anybody tried to record the output from the HDi box using a PC and a MPEG2 capture card like a Hauppauge PVR150 or PVR250. I doubt if those cards respect any Macrovision in the signal but I can't test.

the PVR150 works well.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.
