I'm not sure if what I am experiencing with my TiVo unit is normal or if I have a buggy console, I'd appreciate any advice on if anyone else is experiencing the symptoms below with their TiVo devices or if it is just mine.

Samsung 32" LCD
TiVO 320, connected direct to TV via HDMI
Connected to the net via Wireless.

When we first turn on the TV (with the TiVo Remote) the buttons on the remote that have been programmed to work with the TV work fine but it takes 30-60 seconds for the Tivo buttons to start working correctly.

The red light on the Tivo remote lights up each time a button is pressed but the yellow light on the front of the Tivo does not appear. Slowly the button presses start to work and after a minute of the TV being on and the first remote button press everything is responsive, but for that 1st period of time it can be quite frustrating.

The issue occurs each time we turn the TV on for use after it has been inactive for awhile. We use the TV power function on the Tivo remote to turn the TV on and we can adjust the volume straight away. The 'Tivo' commands from the remote are not however consistently received by the Tivo unit for 30-60 seconds.

Tests Carried out so Far:

  • Changed the batteries in the remote.

  • Tried from directly in front of the TiVo unit.

  • Turned off all other devices (DVD Recorder and VCR).

  • I was supplied a replacement remote from TiVo, still the same symptoms.

  • Tried with and without energy saver lightbulbs in case they were causing interference.

  • I performed a global rest of the remote and this made no difference.

  • When the remote is viewed through a camera viewfinder the 'blue' light is visible.

From the symptoms we are seeing the remote is working fine and it seems like there is a warm up period on the TiVo unit where it does not respond to the remote commands for 30 seconds after you first try, and then for the next 30 seconds it responds intermitedly. After approximately 60 seconds the Remote and Tivo unit work perfectly as expected.

Is anyone else experiencing this, or do I have a faulty device?

The Tivo is on all the time, so I would not expect that you should see a 'warm-up' time when you hit the power button, as the Tivo is not turning on.

To me it sound like you are getting interference from the TV for a short time after it starts up.

Have you tried with a different TV to see if you get the same results?

Unfortunately I only have the one TV in the house so I'm somewhat limited in terms of trying on a different set-up.

I guess I could try unplugging the TV to remove that as a possible interference source and then seeing if the yellow light illuminates on the front of the TiVo unit when the buttons are pressed.

It seems weird that the remote works fine after the initial period, I would have thought if it was interference from the TV then it would be a constant problem and not only during the first 'warm up' use.

Could you position the Tivo as far away from the TV as posssible for testing purposes?

I've been meaning to update the post with the solution I found and thought I'd give a quick update for anyone that experiences similar problems of a delay between the Tivo Remote and the TV when first used.

It turns out there is an interference between the TV I have (Samsung 32" LCD) and the Tivo Remote. After trawling through the net I found a couple of forums where people had similar issues and found that by adjusting the Energy Saving and Backlight settings on the TV that the delay disappeared.

The settings I changed on the TV for Backlight and Energy Savings are as per below:
  • Energy Savings - OFF
  • Backlight Setting - 6
Since changing the settings I now never have a delay on the remote, and my wife is happy again!
