jmumby: You pay when you pick up at the moment. I am sure if you we a regular customer they would set up some sort of credit system. As for your order, they could just yell out your order number when it was ready. I think it works as much for the retailer as for you so systems could be put in place.


But as I said before you still have to wait in line to pay for your coffee, all you have done is taken out the girl behind the counter taking your order. Now of course they could set up an express lane, but then that means extra staff etc.
Now on the other if it had online payment or self service NFC in the store, then it would work much better.

Its pretty cool - I reckon it would be a popular system - I'd probably use it - I think you may be on to a winner there!

Though you might want to run a spell checker over it just as a tidy up.

"You don't need a complicted computer systems" = "You don't need complicated computer systems"
on the front page.

It's funny how superficial things like typos and grammar errors make things look a little less professional - sorry if I am being picky

Hope to see it in a shop near me soon....

My experience with online apps for ordering (once you _know_ what you want) is that they are slower.

Saying "triple shot short black" or "triple shot mocha in a mug" is a lot quicker than pecking thru many screens that probably have a loading time between them.

Worst would have to be dominos site or app, but as I usually dont know what I want and am using it like a menu then I tollerate its arse-ness and frequent failures to actually order. Hint is to screenshot the order so when it fails and you have to call up you can remember what you wanted ;)

We will be pushing out an API next year which will effectively be a 'print driver' for the printers so if you want to write an app that allows people to purchase online, you can go for it.

The problem with mobile apps is a balance between content and bandwidth. Not knocking the dominos app but every choice loads a new screen and has pictures, what a nightmare on 3G.  Smartorder has the initial hit for the app and thats it till you order. More designed for people who know what they want however.

Could you link it to charge the phone account, like the Auckland City parking machines, or is the cost prohibitive?

That would remove the question of waiting in line to pay, like people have been mentioning.

At the store I work in, we use a txt-your-order service and it works adequately. Not very popular - maybe absolute max of 10 orders/week through this service at the current time.

I'll explain to you how this works as it might help you form a picture of how your own service is used...

First, we give out printed cards with our number and details of the service to whoever will take them. To facilitate this we have an el-cheapo mobile phone that sits next to the till. We are a chain so every store has their own phone and own printed cards. When the phone beeps the order is placed by the cashier and saved to a table (we use MenuMate - a really vomit POS). This causes a ticket to be printed and passed to the barista (hopefully the customer mentioned in their text what time they want their order!!!) and when the person arrives they still need to stand in line (if any) to pay for their order.

The company I work for is quite tech-savvy so might be worth approaching for a trial. If you PM me I can pass on a contact name for you?

A suggestion for the future re payment. Tie the app into a prepay system so that the customer can see their balance etc and this is a good system for the office market - repeat business and then mybe email specials etc.

I agree with RichMS in that I still usually find it far, far easier to just say my order than peck through menus.

That said though, I think the actual idea and implementation is pretty awesome. I'm surprised no one's compared it yet to Subway's Ordering system, which is pretty much exactly the same thing. Subway have a "repeat last order" too which is very fast.
