Got a reply from Heatermate AU who asked me to send it back to get a replacement.

Of course I wont.  Thanks for your considered response - troll.  I was trying to buy them locally and to support a local business, but you can just shoot me down for that if you wish.  I would be happy to pay a local supplier a little extra to support them, but I can't warrant paying $20 extra on an item that I can get for $33.  Especially when I want 2 or 3.  I guess there is a whole bunch of people on geekzone that agree with me given the number of people ordering from Aussie.

Thanks for coming... have a nice day.

First, thanks for insulting (calling me a troll).

Second: it's obvious that any business sets their prices to the organic balance between being profitable and being acceptable by customers. And it's fine if you can afford to buy at one place and prefer the other. For them the profitable and reasonable margin is ~$20. It's surprising to see someone ranting about it aloud: you don't like it - you don't buy it, that simple.

You are trolling and you are ranting. Please go away you are starting to annoy me. I was trying to do business with someone that is not you. My reply was for them, not you.

Next time you want to contact someone directly - prefer private messaging or any other channel that is different from a public message board. That way you completely eliminate from your words to be discussed.

Oh wait, then your ranting will see no one but a business that does not care much.

It wasn't a rant it was called feedback. If they dropped their prices a little I would buy from them rather than spending my money in Aussie because that doesn't help the local economy. I posted the original question in the forum because if there was a discount on offer then others would get the benefit of it.
I don't mind conducting my business publicly. Do I have anything to hide, no.
I guess I just didn't expect someone else to have so much time one their hands.

Also stop calling each other names. This is not what we stand for.

Sorry Mauricio, his comments were beginning to annoy me and I do consider that trolling, which is also not what we are about.

Hi guys,

Definitely didn't mean to start a war.
I believe our price is fair.
And Kirk, you are right, you can buy straight from Australia.

Still free shipping for geekzoners - use coupon code geekzone @ www.cleverhome.co.nz

Hi Daniel,

I didn't mean for that to happen either.
I would love to, and prefer to, buy local. That is all I was trying to do.

I really like the sound of the product.  I just can't warrant the extra expenditure in this case.

Thanks for your reply.
Regards
Kirk.

freitasm: One of my Heatermate devices is not turning on (push the On button and the LED doesn't light up - neither green or red).

I tried to pushing the reset button and it is still not working. It shows the current temperature but where it would show the set temperature it just flashes LO.

Anyone seen this? I am going to contact Heatermate now.

Both of our Heatermates have failed. I got the first one replaced, but didn't get around to replacing the second one because winter was almost over. I haven't needed them yet this year.
The mode of failure of the first was that it displayed only the thermostat, RM and decimal place symbols. Pressing the buttons had no effect. I tried the reset button (held for 3 seconds). and I tried leaving the socket switched on for several hours, which used to result in the unit coming to life.
I can't remember the mode of failure of the second, I'll try to find it.
I had to pay for shipping to Australia for the faulty unit. The replacement arrived quickly though.

One of our heatermates died within a few weeks of arrival; the other one is OK.  Returning it was too much of a pain (bought from Australia) so I ended buying some cheap heater controllers from Aliexpress.  They're not as nice looking as the heatermate but both are still working.

As a device you use to connect powerful appliances it makes sense to use something that is certified for use in NZ. Otherwise there might be issues with insurance.

Or catch fire - necessitating the insurance claim

Now both my Heatermate failed. I opened one and I may be wrong but I suspect a leaky capacitor.

One simply stopped working showing "LO" in the temperature.

The other one still shows the set temperature and the environment temperature but despite of the green light there is no power output.

What about you @timmmay ?

That's a worry as I have one. It has gone through the winter and is now out of service for the summer but the track record sounds patchy.

New @ feature - nice one @freitasm.

Mine still works fine. I use it for about two months each winter. I've just put it into a drawer again until next winter.
