Its usually every couple of years I think, but you can buy the filters from Bunnings a lot cheaper if you want to fit it yourself
PhantomNVD: Mine was also wired with an isolating switch in the ceiling, but on hot day like today I just switch it off at the mains distribution board in the garage. As mentioned above, from around 9pm it IS useful to draw down fresh (filtered) cool air from the ceiling, but we just switch it off again in the morning so it doesn’t feel the need to draw down the 40-60C air from the roof.you shouldn’t need to switch it off in the morning you should be able to set a ideal temp (22 we set) and after the house is at or above 22 the fan will not bring any more warm air down so yours must be faulty
Unfortunately HRV decided to only allow a 4 hour ‘off’ period when you use the controller, which is why it keeps turning itself on, as it’s ‘job’ is to be a “Positive Pressure System” and force the air inside to be higher pressure to move the (generally higher humidity) house air outside.
On the plus side, this year (the first time I’m intentionally switching it off) is the first time my hay fever has come back, so I might actually try leaving the (very slow) fan bringing warmer air down next year and see if the filtering is what has kept me allergy free for the last two years too!
(Anyone know how often the filter needs changing?)
And thats real cosy when there is a frost outside and the HRV decides it time to ventilate the home at 4am
andrewNZ: Incorrect again. The fans in these units are ALWAYS running, they just slow right down when the roof is too hot/cold.No you are incorrect I have been in the roof and felt the outlets and there's no air at all it shows the fan speed on the control panel
There is always air coming in.
As you can see in the pics one shows the fan running and the other shows the fan stopped ( the bars indicate the speed no bars = fan not running. maybe you have a different model to ours and yours runs all the time.
I am tall and I can easily feel any air coming out of the vents in the rooms.

They cost very little to run
I can stop mine too But it starts again automatically I bet your one does the same I can turn it off going to bed and it starts when the outside air is coldest and decides to pump it into the house
half1:Lol it's supposed to do that to cool your home down to the temp you set!

So look at the posts and tell me why people are putting off on switches on theirs Could it be they have the same problem as me? HRV has a mind of its own and its not sensible

it could be an older version as i know the DVS used to do this, ie keep the fan running all the time but a newer controller changed that and now it stops under certain conditions
both could be right

Fan itself might not, but re heating the cold air it's dragging, (or cooling the hot if you have air con as well), will cost you more.
And this time of the year with the security door open all day and most of the night, all you need is the HRV pumping hot air in from the roof when you want to cool the house down, It seems to me it does everything that it shouldn't

You can turn them right off though right?
