Do all lights seem to have normal brightness when working? I once had an issue with an intermittent bad earth due to paint under a connection that looked okay visually and worked normally some of the time. If the connection was broken the lights would still get a series circuit through other lights. Turn indicator went crazy from voltage drop. I had a lot of fun figuring it out.

Try adding temporary earth bypass connection just to make sure that's not the issue.

When I had a problem with one of the trailer lights acting odd, I discovered it was a faulty relay switch in the boot. I think they wear over time as it was about 12 years old.

I got sick of the old bulbs on the trailer. The fittings were rubbish - corrosion issues, and bulbs always blowing. Ripped them out and replaced with LEDs, problem solved 😁.

To full circle this:

It turns out 3 or 4 years ago when i got the towbar installed they didn't install the ECU the quote said I needed and I paid for.

When I went back to the towbar people they tested, said it was fine, and said the only option was to rerun cables etc, which would be a charge. I asked them where they were and what to look for to check the connections, and when I pulled out the light - no ECU.

After a call they said my model it wasn't required but recommended, so they didn't install it. Since my quote and invoice had it included got them to install it - at no additional charge.

Good as gold now.

Pretty frustrated - spent a good few hours on this.

The US market drives a lot of "the trailer interface black box is required" because they have a mix of indicators and brake lights being used as indicators.

We've got to the end of this saga without ever finding out what your car is.
