i live in Rotorua and my outside unit in fact went through the corrosion treatment in which they take apart the unit and treat every part that can be treated  and put it back together , i didnt have a choice it had to be done if you wanted to be part of the scheme that the council and environmental BOP were running. after 12 years it is good as new

That's great and possibly lucky as there are some horror stories. My brother is there too and has had no major issues with his AC unit, its about to 15 years old. It does depends on where you are in Rotorua, some areas worse than others for the sulphur dioxide and hydrogen sulphide. Sulphur dioxide forms sulphuric acid when combined with water.

 

I've seen a unit fail after 18 months and not worth repairing, leaks on both indoor and outdoor coils, quite close to Whakawerawera which was about 150 metres away.
