It is always recommended you use your own ISP DNS. The use of third party DNS may affect local caches, such as the Google cache some ISPs have in New Zealand. Using third party DNS should be done on a device-specific level, generally not at network level (unless your streaming device doesn't allow network settings).

rokki: Playing devils advocate lets say the ISP's with "Transparent Proxies "don't play ball what options do we have apart from leaving and going to an ISP who doesn't I am with Vodafone and have had very good experience. My last ISP's both Slingshot and Orcon a dreadfull experience. Is this something that Unblockus and Unotelly could workaround at their end ?


I was previously with Telecom (Xtra) for many many years and had woeful service- when our lines went under ground some years ago, Chorus did a quick fix with our connection with the intention to come back and rewire it properly. Guess what- 4 years later we were still waiting and living with constant disconnects (sometimes couldn't even stay on line for more than 30 seconds). Rang and rang and rang and rang and rang Telecom and every time had to go through their infuriating tiered support (level 1= power cycle the router, change sockets, change plugs etc, level 2 repeat level 1, hold the line for supervisor until phone battery goes flat, ring back and start again at level 1 etc). Eventually gave up and went to Slingshot three years ago on the understanding that they would sort the issue- within two weeks Mr Chorus was at the house to properly fix their "temp" fix. Never had a problem since- Slingshot have been grand to deal with- connection is now fast, stable and internet package is reasonably priced (VDSL no cap + home phone for $99 per month).   So long as you ring the help desk with the understanding and patience that you will more than likely have to help them to help you, you shouldn't have an issue.


Can you use Slingshot Global Mode in conjunction with UnoTelly/Unblock-Us so that you can still easily change NF region?


Yup you can. I use free HOLA unlbocker on Chrome to access different regions in conjunction with Slingshot's Global Mode.

MadManNZ: Just a thought about this newly discovered transparent proxy misconfiguration on the vodafone network. Would this affect youtube is I have been on the top plans from Vodafone and telstra before that and I have just about always had issues streaming youtube. I can download at 100mBit without issue but streaming youtube has always had issues on all devices I use.
I might be completely off base as I am not 100% fluent with all the behind the scenes network stuff used by ISP's etc

Youtube does run a CDN based network also the data could be cached on our servers.
If you are using a 3rd party DNS it very well could affect your youtube performance.

Vodafone forum  seems to have set the Netflix conversation to read only

When I signed up for fibre with Vodafone I specifically told the customer service operator that I would be using the service for Netflix. He said "it will be great for Netflix, with the 100/50 plan you will have no buffering problems at all"

 

 

 

So despite what TimA is trying to tell us all about the consumer guarantees act not applying in this situation and that vodafone has no obligation to fix the problem (that all the other ISPs have fixed), I believe he is wrong.

 

 

 

A representative of Vodafone told me that the service I was buying would be suitable for the purpose of watching Netflix...so I believe Vodafone does have an obligation to fix its badly configured proxy

 

 

 

Oh and since all calls to home are recorded…

Hi all, just one thing about the point raised above.  I would like to know if anyone during the Netflix outage (especially Vodafone customers) has also noticed problems with the Xbox Live, PlayStation Network or iTunes App stores.   I have had issues with them in the past that looked to be related to transparent caching.    They are all legitimate services and if Vodafone's transparent cache is causing greater impact there is scope under the Consumer Guarantees Act to ask them to fix or to discount their bill.



Our network isnt impacting those services. No other reports have come past me nor have i had a single issue with XBL and Itunes. Do note if you are using a different DNS who knows what CDN or location you might be pulling data from.
Non standard setups are not our problem if you have issues.

Further to post: I found when using Unblock-US i got my Origin downloads from Singapore and Itunes from USA.


Tim, is that the Vodafone line - if it doesn't work, and you don't have default settings, go away?

Telecom responded (bloody quickly too I might add for an ISP their size) and fixed the issue with their transparent proxy.
If your response is also the company line (I don't know if it is) then it would seem no-one there is interested in fixing what has been demonstrated to be a configuration error in the transparent proxy. I believe that should be grounds to terminate a term contract for those people stuck on one with Vodafone.

I now use a 3rd party DNS service perhaps for around 6 months. The trouble with youtube has been present long before I started using it. Also 2 guys I sit with in the office here who are also on vodafone have the exact same issue using youtube and basically only youtube. One of them using a different 3rd party DNS service to me and the other one uses the default vodafone DNS as provided by vodafone. Just wondering if this could possibly be the same type of issue and looking forward to seeing if it is fixed for us all once you fix your Proxy config :)

50/50 success here.





I'm on Vodafone cable (old Telstra) and have about 50/50 success rate. If things play then they generally play ok, it's getting them to play without dropping back to the menus when it drops out of the buffering process which is the problem.

I'm using UnblockUS (with their DNS on the router) and testing on a PC, Roku and Samsung Smart TV.

What is now working for me is playback on the PC which failed everytime in the last few days with the N8210 error.

This is not related.

The Netflix issue is as a result of a change made by Netflix of their URL strings, which impacted the transparent proxies of the ISP's. This issue will touch nothing but Netflix services from US & Canada.

Vodafone, Telecom, Slingshot, etc....use transparent proxies - this is why users at smaller ISP's the likes of Snap! were unaffected, as they do not have this setup.


You need to reread what Unblock-us reported.  Netflix made a change that graphically illustrated existing problems with the NZ ISP transparent caches.  there's plenty of historical complaints in this forum about transparent cache behaviour.


This is bang on. VF dismissing this as 'netflix changed something thats why it broke' is wrong. The Netflix change exposed the issue - now its up to VF, like the other ISPs, to make the change.

I now use a 3rd party DNS service perhaps for around 6 months. The trouble with youtube has been present long before I started using it. Also 2 guys I sit with in the office here who are also on vodafone have the exact same issue using youtube and basically only youtube. One of them using a different 3rd party DNS service to me and the other one uses the default vodafone DNS as provided by vodafone. Just wondering if this could possibly be the same type of issue and looking forward to seeing if it is fixed for us all once you fix your Proxy config :)

This is out of my hands, I am not the one that calls network changes. I, as said before cant say what Vodafone's approach is on this topic. Not in any way have i stated that Vodafone dismisses this.
As for others implying Vodafone have no intent on even considering this issue, I did state we cant speak of intentions publicly unless its officially released.

You need to reread what Unblock-us reported.  Netflix made a change that graphically illustrated existing problems with the NZ ISP transparent caches.  there's plenty of historical complaints in this forum about transparent cache behaviour.
